THIS BOX IS MISSING. We will be replacing it summer '06 and we will post a notification to the main list.

Balto was the lead dog of the last dogsled team in a desperate relay carrying serum to Nome, Alaska in 1925 to stop a diptheria epidemic. Blinded by the driving ice and strong winds, the driver was unable to steer the sled during the grueling 53 miles, but Balto followed the snow-covered trail to deliver the serum and his driver safely to Nome. The epidemic was halted and Balto and the rest of his team were lauded as heroes. They were taken to Seattle to reenact the serum run for a short educational film. Upon landing, Balto was presented with a key to the city in the shape of a dog bone. The serum run made by these dogs is still honored by the 1,150-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, which follows part of the same trail that Balto and his fellow dogs took in 1925.

You will need to find the statue of Balto in Central Park(incidentally, the only statue in NYC commemorating a dog). Stand with your back to Balto's nose. Turn to your left, and go through the stone archway. Keep to the right as you get to the end of the arch. One pace after you exit, you will see a steel grate at your feet. Bend down to tie your shoe and glance to the right -- in the low stone wall, you will see a hole at ankle height. Using extreme stealth, reach in the wall and to the right to find the Balto microbox. You will need to bring your own inkpad.

Please use care when retrieving and replacing this box as this is a popular area. Make sure the cap is screwed on tightly before replacing. We would love to know how this box is doing: ckanaa@netscape.net.
