Planted and ready for finding. Very sad to report that the statue is under renovation and is covered. There is great view of the river.

Take a scenic drive down highway 2 from Rockford to Oregon. Admire the beautiful scenery and riverfront. Every time I drive this stretch of highway I long to be out canoeing on the Rock River. As you make your way closer to Oregon you will see, across the river, the bluffs are graced with a majestic image of an American Indian. It is a 50-foot statue that is a tribute to all Native Americans. Many people associate this statue as being Chief Black Hawk but it’s not. Chief Black Hawk, at one time, did reside in this area and many times talked of its beauty.

Once you see this statue go to it. You will find part of your journey there. Head into Oregon till you get to the stop light, highway 64 and go east on this road. Go across the Rock River and turn left, north, on River Road. Go about two miles and you will see on your right White Oak Campgrounds and just ahead on the left is Lowden State Park. This park serves as a memorial to Governor Frank O. Lowden who was governor of Illinois during World War 1. Go to the back of the campgrounds and you can either park and walk to the statue or drive to it.

Lorado Taft created the statue of the Native American. It is hollow statues 50 feet tall, made up of cement, pink granite chips and screening. Go up to the statue and you can read more on the making of the statue and history of this area. You also have a wonderful view of the Rock River and the town of Oregon.

After taking in the view take the trail that the statue is looking towards. Just to the right as you enter the trail you will see a trail of stairs heading to the river. If you are up to it the trail is worth checking out. If not continue on the dirt trail. Stay left when met with a choice and you will soon be on the road. Look left and you will see a trail and a big green box. Go to that trail and stop. Look into the woodsy area and find the sharp stump.
Your first box is at the base. Stamp in and rehide carefully.
