“Of all the letterboxes in all the towns in all the world, you chose ours.”
- quote adapted from “Casablanca”

We’re glad you chose our letterbox. This letterbox is dedicated to screen actor Humphrey Bogart. Known as “Bogie” to his friends and fans, his career spanned 36 years from 1920 to 1956. He starred in such memorable films as: Casablanca, Key Largo, The African Queen, The Maltese Falcon, To Have and Have Not, and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

Clues

“Clues? We ain’t got no clues. We don’t need no clues. I don’t have to show you any stinking clues.”

OK, OK. I guess we DO have to give you some clues, otherwise you’ll never find the letterbox.

But first, do your homework. If you try to find this letterbox without knowing some facts about Bogie, you’ll regret it. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life.

Any gumshoe will tell ya to begin your search in Hines Park, at the Benton Hills Disc Golf Course parking lot, south of Seven Mile Rd. Park in the lot, and cross the road on foot. Watch for cars. Have you made it this far? You’ve got moxie. Yes you have!

Now, make your way to the sign with the Bennett Arboretum map. Take a bearing of 230 degrees from the sign, and walk until you reach the lone tree at the edge of the path, just before the woods. Turn right, and walk _____ steps (Lauren Bacall’s age when To Have and Have Not was released). Follow the path on your left into the woods. As you can see, this is not The Petrified Forest. As you stay on this path, the trees will gradually become larger, and you’ll pass a bat house. When you reach a wider path, turn left. By following this route, you can prove beyond the shadow of a doubt, and with geometric logic, that “The Daddy Tree” does exist. Have you found “The Daddy Tree”? You’re a good man, Sister. I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

From “The Daddy Tree”, continue north until you reach a clearing. Head east in the clearing, and pick up the trail heading south, back amongst the trees. You’re getting close. Be discreet. Don’t yell. Don’t whistle. You know how to whistle, don’t you? You just put your lips together and… blow.

Follow the path until you find a large tree with many carvings on your left. From this tree, continue on the trail heading southeast. Stay on the trail for as many steps as Bogie’s age when he died.

Now, Kid, here’s looking to your right.

Please be discreet when removing this box. Please re-hide well. Bring your own stamp pad.
