***The Rivermaid has been removed for maintenance. When (or if) she is replanted, the clues will be updated***

The Rivermaid takes her repose in an often-overlooked natural wonderland near the Kinnickinnic River. You won't believe how quickly it turns from a suburban street into total nature immersion. This hike is a doggie's dream-come-true, and supervised kids shouldn't have any trouble either. From Foster Street in River Falls, turn right onto River Ridge Road. About one block down on the right you'll see a paved trail with a chain across to keep cars from driving on it. Park by the curb and start down the trail to track down the reclusive Rivermaid.

When you come to a "Y," veer to the left, continuing downhill. Soon the woods will open up and if you look towards the river, you'll see a wooden bench. Make a sharp right near the bench and follow the trail that parallels the river.

It is a quick trip to the place where two large paths will converge with yours from the right. When you are just past the second path, stop. Begin counting 54 steps. You should now see a large oak tree conspicuously close to the trail on your right, and on the left is a small side trail. Take the small trail towards the river.

When you see the trail start to drop down the riverbank, stop, turn around, and backtrack 9 steps. Look for a tiny path at a bearing of 4 degrees. It's more of a deer trail than anything, so look sharp. Head down the deer trail about 24 steps. Go slowly so you can look to the right for a many-trunked tree a few steps off the path.

When you see it, head into the woods to the side of the tree farthest from the river. Standing here with the tree on your left, take a bearing of 37 degrees and walk about 14 steps until you see another many-trunked tree on your right.

Once you find this tree, look nearly straight ahead for a very large, rotting stump and the fallen trunk just beyond. The Rivermaid rests away from the view of men in a hollow on the East side of the fallen trunk. She is well camouflaged under strips of mossy bark.
