David and Goliath

A pleasant walk over woods trails and a paved path, about .8 mile in total. Please bring your own stamp pad, pen and compass. The first two boxes are micros, the third is a regular size box with a log book.

This land was at one time part of the Baier Lustgarten Nursery, once the largest nursery in New York State. It is one of the newest acquisitions to the Pine Barrens Preserve and it is maintained by the Department of Environmental Conservation. You will see native vegetation slowly overtaking the remaining nursery stock, and you may notice large holes (off trail) where ornamental trees were once grown . And of course, you will come face to face with David and Goliath.

Directions: Long Island Expressway (495) to William Floyd Parkway exit 68.Travel north to Rte. 25. Take 25 west about 1.9 miles to Wading River Hollow Road. Make a right onto this road. Proceed .5 mile. Park on the right shoulder. You will see two fat wooden poles marking the beginnings of the trail. (Take either path, they merge into one).

Clues: Take this woods trail for .2 mile. It will T into a paved path. Make a left onto the paved path, and proceed a short distance, looking for an upright, short, orange painted metal pole to the right of the trail. Stop, turn around and take 12 steps. David is at 270*about 8 steps from the trail. Look behind and under him for the first micro letterbox.

Back on the trail, continue on. After a short while, the paved path will begin a gentle curve to the right. As it turns, look on your left for a young three sister oak tree. The second micro box is hidden in its base, under a rock.

After stamping in you will notice the three sister oak is next to a small deer path. Take it and after about 50 steps you will come face to face with Goliath. As you approach him, pass a small path on his east side. Follow the trail straight back to a tree with a big blue patch. Just in front of it are two downed trees that form a Y. Between the two branches of the Y lies a large, triangular shaped rock. At its base is a niche hidden by a large stone. The Goliath Letterbox is hidden in the niche.

This is the second Goliath box I have had to place here.
This area is frequented by all kinds of hikers, so please rehide the boxes well, in the original places and manner mentioned in the clues. If there are any problems with these boxes, please contact me through www.letterboxing .org. Retrace your steps to return to your car.
