BOX HAS BEEN REPLACED (8/25/08)

The Lorenzo is a historic mansion on the shores of Cazenovia Lake in the beautiful town of Cazenovia. The Lorenzo Letterbox is hidden in the well manicured, serene gardens of the mansion which are free to wander. If you want to tour the mansion it will cost you $5.00/adult and $1.00/child under 12 years old. There's a long history of the mansion and gardens that you can find at the following link www.lorenzony.org/history.php. I recommend that you take some time to look at the website before you go on your letterbox hunt.

This is an easy walk that is very kid and stroller friendly. If it's a nice day, bring a picnic lunch to eat by the lake or at the picnic tables at Lorenzo. There are many fields that your kids can run and play in.

To get to Lorenzo:

FROM THRUWAY WESTBOUND

Thruway west to Canastota Exit (Exit 34); follow Route 5 to 13 (Chittenango) south to Cazenovia; continue through the village of Cazenovia (20/13) stay on Route 13 south; the entrance to the site is a right turn directly off Route 13, south, 1/4 mile south of the intersection of Routes 20 and 13.

FROM THRUWAY EASTBOUND

Thruway east to Route 481 (Exit 43A); follow route 481 south to Genesee Street Exit (Route 92); take Route 92 East south to the junction of Route 20; turn left at Route 20 stop light and travel on Route 20 east 3/4 mile to Route 13 south and turn right, the entrance to the site is a right hand turn directly off Route 13 south, 1/4 mile south of the intersection of Routes 20 and 13.

FROM ROUTE 81

Exit at the Lafayette/Route 20 exit; follow route 20 east for 16 miles to Cazenovia; at the junctions of Routes 20 and 13, take Route 13 south; the entrance to the site is a right hand turn directly off Route 13, 1/4 mile south of the intersection of Routes 20 and 13.

The main entrance to Lorenzo on Route 13 is marked by a site sign with a beautiful white swan and the words “Lorenzo State Historic Site”.

Directions to the Lorenzo Letterbox:

Park in the visitor’s lot of Lorenzo off of Route 13. Begin walking South towards the water fountain in the grill area near the woods. Find the path that is marked by a pine tree with its bark peeling on the top half. Head down the path. Continue straight when the path turns right or left. Enjoy the quiet walk past the GIANT old oak on your right. Again you can turn but be sure to stay straight. At the L.L. rock turn right and follow the gravel path through the beautiful flower gardens. When you’re done enjoying the beauty of the many different flowers, you should find yourself exiting a gate with the Lorenzo in front of you. Turn left out of the gate and follow the fence to the "Y" shaped leaning tree on your left. Start down the path in front of you that is lined with tall pines on both sides. Before you get too far, you’ll have the choice to turn right down a short path. Take this path until it ends at a rock patio area with a field in front of you. When standing on the patio be sure to notice the large Cedar to your right with long arms pointing towards the field. There may be benches available to sit for a spell and enjoy the quiet. If the benches have been put away or after sitting for a spell, have a seat on the large rock at the far right corner closest to the large Cedar. (The area off the left side of the patio is vining with poisin ivy so stay away from that side) You’ll find the Lorenzo Letterbox safely tucked away behind you hidden under the patio and behind some ferns. You DO NOT have to remove any of the rocks to find the box. Please try not to trample the ferns helping to hide the letterbox. This may be a high traffic area at times so please be discreet when finding and rehiding the box. Please be sure the letterbox is tucked away so that other visitors won’t see it as my original box went missing a year ago, most likely because it wasn't rehidden well enough.

After you’ve completed your task, you can return to the parking area either by continuing down the path lined by pines or by turning left into the field and following it around to the parking lot. If the Lorenzo is open, you may want to take a tour to finish your visit. Be sure to spend some time strolling down Main Street of Caz if this is your first visit to the area. Enjoy your stay!
