Rating: Very easy short walk (Our barely two-year-old had no trouble, even after an hour on the jungle gym).

Shenantaha Creek Park is located off of Eastline Road in Malta, NY. It is open seasonally from 7:30am until dusk. There are two soccer fields, two tennis and basketball courts, a volleyball court, two pavilions, a bathroom, and a playground.

Running through the park is the level paved path which streches from Round Lake past Ballston Creek and into Ballston Spa (includes the Zim Smith Trail, and you can "Hike it or Bike it" hint hint).

Surrounding the active recreational area of this old farmland are woods, full of oaks, maples, pines hemlocks and shad. There is a moraine area where deep bowls worn in rocks are the result of glacial action and may have been used as mortars for grinding acorns by Native Americans during seasonal encampments. The remains of a mill that pressed flax seed oil can be found along the creek. There are many foot trails leading to the stream and beautiful wooded areas with old stone walls.

CLUES: Check out the playground equipment. Look roughly eastward to a lone tree with a boulder to its left. Climb the boulder, and look across the field in a southernly direction to the two blue and yellow historical markers. Cross the field to the markers and read about the glacially deposited boulders and the old Oil Mill. Take the path into the woods directly behind the Mill sign. The path is packed dirt, probably wide enough for a stroller (only a few roots to bump over in a couple of patches). . Keep going just a little farther after your first glimpse of the creek, and you'll arrive at the site of the old mill. There are several drop-offs, so keep a tight hold on little ones. There is a relatively easy slope down to the water's edge, and a convenient bank of little pebbles for tossing into the water (something my kids can never resist doing!)

When you're done exploring, play King of the Mill: stand with your back to the creek, and your right hand touching a middle-sized maple tree (the only tree up there). Look off into the woods at about 2:00 for a large boulder near a pine tree. Find the best way down to it (go back up the trail a few paces) and look for the letterbox at the base of the boulder. We've wedged it under and piled a couple of rocks on top to discourage animals. Please take the time to reseal the box tightly and hide it as well or better than you found it!

To return, continue on the path which heads downstream and then curves northward back toward the playground. This portion of the path is narrow and twisty, and definitly not suitable for strollers. You will pass a few boulders with the circular depressons created by glacers that some think may have been used as mortars. At a T, go left (right takes you back to the mill) and you will very shortly emerge into the field near the historical markers.

Please let us know the condition of the box when you find it - if it needs work, we'll have an added incentive to drive up to Ballston Spa to visit grandparents :)
