These 4 boxes were originally at the Spring Gather in NY's Bowdoin Park 2005. (Additional notes: after melting snow or a week of soaking rains, the lake will be up on the trail described. However, there is another way, but only the strong minded shall pass). ;-)

Travel Directions:

Exit off the NY State thruway at Kingston. Head west on Rte 28 (take your first right after the toll). Go straight through 2 red light intersections. You may wish to stop at the Catskill Forest info board. It is about 2 miles from the second light on the right. Continue 1.2 miles from this same board where there is a sign that says "driveways". The road bends here and QUICKLY you will see a brown sign that says Onteora Lake on the right again. You can drive down to the lake when the gate is open. If it is closed it may take you an extra 15 minutes to do the walk.

Bring your clues for the Centennial letterbox and use these directions for getting there.

Walk pass the 'kiosk' on the gravel path. About 3/4th of the way turn left onto a dirt trail which eventually leads to a yellow marked trail.

Walk on this trail that parallels the lake. The lake will soon disappear. Continue on the trail until you see another trail come in from the left. If you see a fire circle here you have not gone far enough. Stand where the two paths converge. Take a bearing of 350* which points at a pile of flagstone rocks off into the woods. This pile has 4 trees 'growing' out of it (go over and check it out to be sure!) At the base of the two trees standing closest to each other is Box #1.

Continue on the trail where you took the bearing. In about 8 to 10 steps on the right hand side you will see a small stone circle. Stay on the trail. Soon you will cross a drainage pipe then go up a small hill. At the top on the right is a spor. Face the spor and then count 4 paces into the woods. Leaning against an old quarried area is Box #2.

Continue back on the same trail in the same direction. A fork will appear on the left-hand side rather quickly. Take this trail stopping when you see two stumps on either side of the trail looking directly at each other. Walk on the path 4 more paces and on the right you spot an oak tree holding onto Box #3.

Go back to the fork where you went off the original path. (Be good and do not cut through the brush) Continue in the direction of the original trail. Eventually, and this is really a shortly, you will see a tall pine with feasting holes standing on a cliff face. Make your way over to the bottom of the cliff face. Stand there and put your back to the path walk over to a 4 sister oak. Just near the sisters and along the rotted oak is Box #4. (missing)

You have now completed the series. If you wish to continue a bit further (and I mean a little bit) you will find the Catskill Centennial LB.
