Moss Lake holds great memories for our family. We first started camping here when my youngest was 6 months old - that was 21 years ago. I chose to carve marshmallows on a stick because that was our nightly ritual. Take Rt 28 from Old Forge north 9 to 10 miles to Eagle Bay. From Rt 28 in Eagle Bay take Co Rt 1(Big Moose Road) north 2.2 miles. CLUES: There are two parking lots. If you can find a spot in the first one park there. Take the time to read the large sign about Moss Lake girls camp. After signing in turn right and follow the trail that goes around the lake. After a short while you will see the second parking lot (reserved for handicap parking)continue along the "paved" trail until you come to a fork (not a spoon as my children would tell me) in the road and turn left. Continue along this path until you reach the lake. Here you will see an observation deck. If you look straight out to the Island you might be able to see the ospreys on their nest. Listen and you might hear the loons. Face the lake with the deck on your left. You will notice to your right a multi-trunked tree with one trunk broken off. There is also an old sign backing nailed about 12 feet up on one trunk. Follow the small narrow trail just to the right of this tree. Don’t go too far. You will see a very old blow down on your right. Crawl over the root end and tucked at the base of the trunk is the letterbox. It is a bit difficult to describe this hidding place and sometimes (when it is wet) hard to reach but if you look behind the root end it is there.
