Save the Rain Forest
(#3 in the Dog Scouts of America “We Can Make A Difference” series)

The MICRO letterboxes in this series all have to do with ecology and preserving our resources. They are all in smallish Tupperware-type containers which may not be completely watertight. Multiple zip-loc baggies protect the box, along with a hiding place that provides shelter and drainage. Please be sure to put the box back exactly as found, to preserve it’s contents. All good Dog Scouts want to clean up their environment. Please be sure to pick up any trash you see as you are on your way to discover this letterbox. See the Dog Scouts of America web site: www.dogscouts.org

Gala and I planted this box at the end of the Genesee County Fair, where we were performing with the Classic Canines for the fair. A pace is two steps. A step is one step. I take small steps, due to the shorter reach of my artificial leg.

You’re going to start by looking for a light pole. There are quite a few of them at the rear of the fairgrounds, so here’s a clue: The pole you’re looking for is at 205* from the Southeast corner of the Sherrif’s Posse Barn, established in 1981. If you walk out to the drive that runs past the back of this barn, you’ll go 160 steps to reach this pole.

At the pole, take a heading of 125* and walk 50 paces to a short trail through a section of woods with low, marshy area on both sides. 150 steps later, you’ll come out on the other side, where there is a clearing. From the edge of the woods, walk 145 steps, to a crossroad. 25 more steps will take you across the intersection. Straight ahead is a faded two-track. To the right and left is the trail that leads out to the “3 mile trail” that we use when practicing sled dog racing at the Mt. Morris Youth Activity Center (Fairgrounds). You’re going to take the prominent main trail that crosses your path (you’ll be going slightly to the right). You’ll see a set of gates further down the trail (point of reference only).

About 120 steps from the turn onto the main trail, you’ll see another faded two track fork off the main trail just ahead. If you get there, you’ve gone too far. Take a heading of 21* and walk 34 steps across the open field to a spot that looks like a likely hiding place.

Please be sure to carefully reclose the container and baggie, and cover with bark to protect against rain and visibility.
