DIRECTIONS:
From the Six Mile Creek parking lot (see directions for Wildflowers #1 and #2), turn left back onto Giles St. Follow Giles until it turns into a one-way street and then dead-ends at Hudson. Turn left onto Hudson and follow it more than a mile (the name will change to Coddington Road). Pass the entrance to Ithaca College on your right, then soon after turn left onto Juniper Road. Follow Juniper to the end and park in the small parking area at the entrance to the South Hill Recreation Way.
This is only a segment of the whole South Hill Recreation Way. You can follow it to the end for a round trip of three miles, or just to the box for a two mile total. The path is part macadam, part packed dirt/rock and can be uneven at times. It is mostly level, though there is a slight uphill incline as you walk towards the box. Jogging strollers would work fine, but rollerblades and regular strollers probably wouldn't. Dogs are allowed on leash. Please be alert for bicyclists. Families might be interested to know that there's a great Leathers playground here, as well.
Trout Lily
From the parking area, head to the right on the South Hill Recreation Way. Walk through a metal gate after passing a 1.5 mile marker (just FYI, these markers start at a section of trail before where the clues start). After the 1.0 mile marker, you'll pass a bench on the left and a wood-railed bridge soon after. At the next bench/bridge combo, stop at the bench to admire the gorge stretching ahead of you.
Facing the bench with your back to the trail and the bridge on your right, you'll see a large boulder embedded in the hill in front of you, to your left. In a cavity on the right side of the rock you'll find a little Trout Lily struggling to set down roots. Please replace the box VERY carefully, using the large slate piece to wedge it in place and covering the box completely with the small stones, branches and leaves that should have been in place when you found it.
I'm aware that this is a very precarious hiding place, but I'm willing to chance it until I can search for a new and better hiding place. If you print out these clues in advance of your search, PLEASE check back right before you go out to make sure I haven't changed the clues in the meantime.
