Ain’t No Mountain High Enough:

Clues updated 7/5/2009 (regarding starting point)

It may be said that there “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” to keep a letterboxer from finding the treasure they seek. Well, we won’t be testing that theory today (easy terrain for this letterbox), but feel free to enjoy some of the hillier terrain at Bald Mountain Recreation Area.

Before you start, you’ll need a little information about two groups that recorded our title song. The number of Supremes before Diana Ross went solo and recorded this song, and the total number of men who have sung with the Temptations over the years.

Begin at the first small parking area on Greenshield Road, east of Lapeer. (There used to be a trail map here, but it's gone now.) Don’t be concerned if you hear gunshots – there is a shooting range close by (“Ain’t No Bullet Fast Enough”??). In spite of warning signs that the trail is a “No Shooting” area, I personally would not recommend hunting for this box during hunting season – Sept. 15 thru March 31.

From the two wooden posts where the trail map used to be, follow the trail north to #2. When you reach #2, and the trail splits, pick the trail that matches the number of Supremes who sang our title song.

“Ain’t No River Wide Enough” – no river today either, but watch for a different water source appearing on your left. When you come to a pipe in the trail, start counting. X=the total number of gentlemen who have been privileged to call themselves part of the Temptations. Take X steps to a tree with many trunks on the shore of the pond on the left side of the trail. X more steps from there, and stop by a small tree closer to the trail than its neighbors. Take a bearing of 130 degrees, if you could look thru the little tree you’d be looking at a larger tree up on a small incline. Walk X steps to that tree, and look under the rock behind it.

This box was originally planted at Hudson Mills for the “Mo’ Boxin’ in Motown” theme at the Great Lakes Gathering 6/20/2005. It has been moved to Bald Mountain Recreation Area in Lake Orion. The trail starts on the north side of Greenshield Road at the westernmost entrance to the trail. There is a small parking area by the trailhead.
