Difficulty:
Easy as pulling off the road.
Getting There & A Little Background:
My family set off on a fact finding mission.
"Where do shoes come from Daddy?"
I answered as genuinely as I usually do, "Why they grow on trees of course."
Mother was most dissapointed in my answer.
BUT to prove that I wasn't really spinning a yarn, we drove across the state of Oregon to prove me right (as usual). Midway between Burns and Ontario, we found a shoe tree somewhere between mileposts 195 & 215. There was a turnout on the North side of the highway with a rather large SHOE TREE. In an effort to help struggling fathers everywhere, we placed a letterbox.
We tried to count the number and variety of shoes this tree produced, but failed miserably. If you choose to explore some more, you'd better be wary. It looks like this is a prime location for the rare brown spoted toilet paper, as it was scattered all over behind bushes and trees near the river.
Happy hunting & who knows, if you like the red ropers at the top of the tree, they might actually fit ... but you'll have to climb to get them. (Let me know if you want a photo ... we do indeed have digital evidence for all the 'Doubting Thomases' I work with.)
Things to Bring:
Seems like most folks who visit bring an old pair of shoes to add to the collection. Bring some to hang on the real tree, or carve some to hang in the stash. (What else are you gonna do with the smaller bits left over from carving anyway?) It'd be real nice to check up on the box and find a treasure trove of stamp shoes on our tree!
Clues:
If you stand at the base of the tree and take a compass bearing of 280, you should see a road reflector on the North side of the road. (Not in the middle of the road, but the flat plastic slat that stands upright at the side ... I don't want anyone getting hit by a semi 'cause my clues were abstract.) Standing at the relfector, take another compass bearing of 340. Along this line, you should see a tree that has bent himself over into an arch of sorts. You might have to forge a trail to get there, but the box is nestled at the base of the tree, under the overhang. You should have to pass a small culvert to get there.
