“Gibbs! Herr Gibbs!”

Herr Gibbs was startled by the loud cry and scurried toward its source.

“Ja, ich komme! I’m coming! What is it Herr Direktor?”

“Gibbs, how long have you been with the THEATER?”

“Over twenty years, Herr Direktor.”

“Twenty-six years! 26 GIBBS! And in your twenty-six years have you ever misplaced a famous composer and his new manuscript?”

“Um. . . no, Herr Direktor, never.”

"Well, the Meister has a concert in one hour and he is no where to be found. You, Gibbs, must look for him!"

“Where should I start, Herr Direktor?

“At the MAIN SCHOOL ENTRANCE of course, between the two large marquis signs. Perhaps the guards right inside the door will have seen him. It is up to you to find him!”

“Ja, Herr Direktor!”

Herr Gibbs ran outside to the brick sidewalk in an effort to retrace the steps of the Missing Meister. He opened a large brass-handled door and walked past the guard station. No one there had seen the Meister.

Gibbs stood in the long rectangular lobby and wondered where to go next. On his right was the small chamber theater, Kilbourn Hall. Dare he take a peek inside? He looked to see if there was a sign announcing a recital in progress. No, there was no sign. He cautiously entered the theater only to catch a glimpse of its sumptuous décor, but did not find the object of his search.

Retracing his steps back into the lobby, he raised his eyes overhead to the ceiling and muttered a small prayer.

Gibbs strode up the staircase at the far end of the lobby. On the second floor, he began looking for someone who might be able to help him. Finally, he ran into Samuel Adler.

“Herr Adler! Have you seen the Meister? He is missing.”

Herr Adler immobilized his head into a ponderous position. “Perhaps,” he said slowly, “the Meister went through these doors to my left. Make sure that you try them all. Sometimes one or two of them are locked. If they do not open, go back to the very front of the lobby downstairs where you entered, and go through the doors on your right (try the "handicapped" doors, too). Then, go up the red-carpeted stairs to the second level, through the Grand Balcony doors, and up a few more stairs.”

What luck! The doors next to Herr Adler were unlocked and Gibbs easily passed through the doorway. He strode resolutely ahead, yet tried to look nonchalant as he knew that any frantic searching at this point was being recorded by four mounted video cameras.

“Meister?” Gibbs whispered hesitantly. Could the Meister have gone inside the theater through the doors on Gibbs’ right? Gibbs walked through the doors and examined the inside of the theater. He wished he had brought a flashlight as the theater was currently not hosting a rehearsal and was very dark.

Gibbs quietly backed out of the theater and continued on his way. Suddenly, to his left, he noticed a small sign above a doorway. It said “Ranlet Lounge.” Gibbs recalled that the sign was sometimes turned around during concerts to read “Women’s Lounge,” and that the staff occasionally forgot to turn it back, but it was safe for all to enter.

“Ach!” thought Gibbs, perhaps the Meister is resting before the performance. He went into the lounge and noticed the antique piano to his right, but found no Meister. Gibbs walked to one of the windows to look down on the city while he determined what to do next. Dejected, Gibbs turned to leave when he spied a small green table on his right. There was a drawer in the front of the table. Could the missing manuscript be inside? And could it somehow lead him to the Missing Meister?

Gibbs reached out his hand to open the drawer. . .
