9.6.07 Confirmed still in place, dry and happy and awaiting more visitors!

If you are camped at Olallie Lake, Trail #732 (.3 mi) connects the Olallie Lake perimeter Trail #731 (2.9 mi) to the Monon Lake perimeter Trail #729 (2.7 mi). Hike to the south end (towards Mt. Jefferson) of Olallie Lake to access #732.

Follow the Monon Lake Trail #729 clockwise through the burn area. Beautiful in its own way, because you can see the land being reclaimed by the new growth of fireweed, huckleberries, small bushy pine trees, and grasses.

To the box: Follow the trail clockwise until you enter an area that didn't burn, and is still green. Watch for a birdhouse on your left, on a tree with bark, surrounded by several grey trees without bark. Behind it a rotting log meets a downed grey tree. Look in the crook under debris.

If you get to a plank boardwalk, you've gone too far.

Monon Trail passes several meadows. When the trail ends at a meadow (with campfire ring near the water) at the south end of the lake, head up to the road and continue until you see another trailhead sign a few minutes later, and rejoin the perimeter hike at this place. (You could hike on through the meadow with no trail but the FS employee I met said that the trail detours to the road here.) There are spectacular views of Olallie Butte along this hike, especially when it is reflected in the water.

Follow around until you meet up again with the 729-732 junction, to head back to Olallie Lake.
