Boxes are retired perminatly, and removed...

Location:
First Landing State Park, Virginia Beach, Va.

Directions:
Its the largest park in the Va Beach area, so locating it will be simple..look on any map of the area. There are 2 entrances to this park. One is on 64th street at the oceanfront..The other it to the north, off Shore Drive...near Fort Story..This is the main entrance and the one you will need to take.

Background:
This park has the best trails I have seen yet....they are long and numerous, as well as providing breathtaking views at times...These boxes has some level of dificulty in locating as steps must be accurate, but should be easy for most..the total hike is about 1.5 to 2 miles, with some medium hills, and some off path hiking...there is a parking fee of $3 during the week..a bit more on weekends....but well worth it.

BOX #1: "The Box"

Go into main entrance off Shore Drive near Fort Story.....You will come to a park ranger booth within 300 feet of the entry to the park.....Pay your fees, ask for a trail map, and drive straight foward....The road twists and turns for awhile..take it to the end to the main parking lot...Park, get your gear, and lets roll.

In the lot, you will see the Visitors Center..Head to it, and to the right of the building you will see a sign for the "Bald Cypress Trail" aka the red trail ....This is the trail we will start from, but may not end on, so your red markers might not be used, so pay attention....Go ahead and start your journey down the trail mentioned above.

Soon into your walk you will be on a bridge/overlook that puts you over a swamp. You will see some activity in the water, and some woodpeckers feasting in the Cypress Trees the path is named for. Cary on...you will soon come to another bridge/overlook area... Again, take note of the black water and trees around you. These bridges were breathtaking and the images will be left in my mind for sometime...No other way to describe it...After you leave this second bridge, you will come have to make a decision, as the path comes to a "T"...Go to the East...

Soon after going East...you will see a large observation area off to your right, that is "U" shaped, and leads back to the path...Check it out for a few, and see if you can locate all the frogs in the swamp..Again...looks like a movie set, but dont pass it up. Get back on path. Walk until you see marker #8 on your right. From this marker, walk 50 steps on the path to a large tree that is in the middle of the path..Once there, go an additional 20 steps foward. Then at 30 degrees will be a small path into the woods. Count the number of letters in the sentence before this one, and walk that many normal steps into the woods, and up hill. On your right you will see a 2-3 foot tall rotten tree stump, with the rest of the fallen tree behind it...behind the stump, under some lage piece of bark is "THE BOX"..stamp in, replace and rehide....go back to the path and go the way you were headed.

Box #2: "THE MAN"

As stated, continue to head the way you were on the path. Soon you will see another large tree in the middle of the path. After that, the trail splits...Go off on the path that is 210 degrees. This will take you over a dead hollow log. From this point the path gets quite hilly, and more difficult as tree roots and rocks cover areas of the trail. You will walk for awhile before seeing a bench on your left, that has been tattooed by many young couples in love....Continue to walk for a bit...

You will see the black water swamp on your right, and after this..you will come upon yet another bridge/overpass... Do not go over it yet. On the left side, right where the bridge railing starts, you will see whom helped fund the structure, and the date it was dedicated..Take note of the calendar date it was dedicated. Now, do not go on the bridge, go to its left so the rail is on your right. You will see a large tree about 10 feet away and right against the wooded rail. With your back on that tree, walk the numerical calendar number (01/??/1111) away from the tree at 220 degrees...this will take you up a VERY steep hill with no real path. if done right you be in the middle of 3 medium trees that form a triangle....Again, look off at 220 degrees...you will see a large tree about 20 steps away....Go to it, and behind it is, "THE MAN"...stamp in, replace and rehide.....go by this box's title to figure ou where to stamp this second stamp.....Go back to the bridge, and over it....and be on your way..and enjoy the many other trails the park has to offer.

thanks, happy trails, and let me know
