This is box number 5 in a 7-part series. This is the 1st series placed through the collaborative efforts of the WIZRDS OF OZ. Who are the Wizards? Craftymouse, Dandelion, WINK and Tarheel; all of us from Oswego!

Ink is included in these boxes, but you should bring your own pen. And bug spray! LOTS of bug spray!

This letterbox is located at Mexico Point State Park on Mexico Point Drive in- you guessed it- Mexico, NY. This is a free park and has lovely areas for picnicking and swimming if you wish. Pets are welcome on a leash and the park is open from dawn to dusk. There’s also some fun historic stuff here that’s worth a look-see.

CLUES: Park in the parking lot. The entrance to the Nature Trail is across the street from the parking area. (Note that the Nature Trail is NOT the one that takes you to Spy Island. As you walk out of the parking lot, turn right and the Nature Trail will be on the left side of the road.) This Nature Trail was an Eagle Scout Project by troop 825, and we think they did a great job! Sign in to the book if you wish. This is a fairly simple trail. It’s clearly marked by many neon arrows of various colors. Don’t worry, it doesn’t matter if they’re different colors because there’s only one trail.

As you head out on the trail, you’ll pass numbered markers. They aren’t evenly spaced, but as long as you make it to number 5, you’re fine. When you get to the 5th marker, stop! On your left is a cool big tree. On the right of the trail is a ‘sort-of’ open area with lots of lovely little ferns. Continuing on the trail, count 20 steps past marker #5. You should see a tree off the trail on the right that has lots of big branches and sticks in a jumble at its base. Step gently over the ferns and go to this tree. With your back to the trail, face the jumbled tree. To its left is another tree that’s slimmer and curving with some missing bark. You need to stand directly between the curvy tree and the jumbled tree. Once you are between these two trees, with your back to the trail, walk three big steps further. At your 11 o’clock is a tree that MUST be haunted. Luckily, that’s not the one you want, so look at your 9 o’clock to a double-trunked tree. Directly in line next to the double-trunked tree is a three-trunked tree with a nest between the trunks. Inside the nest is your 5th bird, “Blue”. Be careful not to poke yourself with the broken branches of any of these trees. Make sure to pack the bird neatly and carefully back into its nest so it won’t be seen. Head back to the trail (don’t mash the ferns please!) and return the way you came. We’re going to explore this great trail some more, so keep an eye out for more boxes here in the future!
