September 2007, Fixed up and ready to go!

Begin at the (free!!) Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison (http://www.vilaszoo.org/).

You may want to walk around the zoo either before or after this trek: either time is fine, as this hunt takes you in a nice loop.

When you’re ready to find the letterbox, start at the lions. Then walk to the animals whose diet turns them pink. Continue on to the bird that seems to look at you with 100 eyes. Exit the zoo and make a right, crossing the street. Walk along the water toward the beach. At the boat house, cross the street again (so you’re back on the side you started) and walk along the path. There’s a bridge on your right: cross it and its smaller sister. Walk toward, then past, the playground on your right. Keep following the path along to the right. Standing in front of the water fountain, cross the street and walk right towards the left-most tree. Stand in front of that tree and walk straight ahead, across the grassy bit, towards the trees; about half-way along, you’ll see a drain grate under your feet. Take that small path into the trees and just a few feet in, you’ll see a big tree just slightly to the right on the path. Stand on the roots of the tree (before passing it) and turn your head to the right: at about 2 o’clock, you’ll see a large tree leaning. The letterbox is in the base of that tree: cover it up well with bark.
