York Woods is located in Elmhurst, west of York Rd. It is part of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. In fact it is the oldest preserve in the district. It contains a great hiking/biking trail, one mile in length. The whole trail is paved so it is definitely handicapped accessible and stroller friendly. It also contains some great open areas for picnicking and bird watching.

Clues:
Park in the south parking area, off of the frontage road. It may be harder to find the entrance than the letterbox. You can access the south entrance from York Rd., just before you reach Oak Brook.

Take the path into the woods. It is northeast of the parking lot. This path into the woods is also your path out. Take a right when you have to make a choice on where to go. Follow the trail around. While you are hiking take a look at all of the old trees. A little ways up, on your left, if you look closely, you can see what appears to be an old grill made of flagstone rocks. There is a little trail that goes to it if you want to investigate.

Further around the trail you will notice a fairly large stump, just off the trail. See if you can figure out how old the tree was. Keep hiking.

While you are walking around you will see many “y’s” and “v’s”. As you hike on, there is a big V about 5 paces off the trail to your left. You can’t miss it. It is very noticeable and really sticks out. Check the point of the V to find what you are looking for. If you reach the North Area parking lot you have gone too far.

Once you have checked in, you can keep going on the trail or head back. The trail loops back to the south parking lot. Be sure to pack up and rehide well. This path has a fair amount of traffic on it.
