Missing as of 7/22/06.

The Seminole Indians of Florida waged the longest war ever fought in US history until Vietnam. They call themselves the Undefeated People because they never surrendered to Federal troops, but negotiated a peace treaty after 7 years of fighting. Some moved to western lands, and others chose to remain in what is now the Everglades. There are eight original clans with a number of related subclans.

The Panther (or Tiger) Clan box is located at the historical site of what may be the oldest masonry structure in the US. Believed to date to 1519, it was built atop a shell midden overlooking the river, possibly by early Portuguese settlers. The role of the original building is a mystery, but other structures have been built atop the massive foundation during its long history. Warring Seminoles burned one such structure (the Turnbull Palace) and every other building in the city of New Smyrna during the war, but the ancient walls remained.

Park near the "Free Library" and climb the mound near the largest cypress tree. Walk along the top of the foundation walls to the central chamber. Let yourself down to the ground inside it. On the west wall of the chamber, in a niche at the base near center point--but more N than S--find the Panther box behind two triangular bits of loose tabby.
