**STAMP IS MISSING AS OF AUGUST 12, 2007**
I'll try to replace it as soon as I can, but it may be a while, as I live 11 hours away! :(

************************************************************

Every summer our family has a picnic lunch out at the Peninsula Point Lighthouse. It is a place that is very special to me, and I love to share it with friends!

From US 2, near Rapid River, take County Road 513 all the way out to the lighthouse point of the Stonington Peninsula. The last 1/4 mile of your drive will be along a twisting one-lane gravel road. Park anywhere in the circular gravel drive.

As you walk towards the lighthouse, notice the foundation stones from the original site of the lightkeeper's home. You can learn about its demise by reading the information board posted to the South of the lighthouse.

Climb the tower, counting how many stairs take you to the top. The Peninsula Point Lighthouse is no longer in working use--on a clear day you can see its replacement, the Minneapolis Shoal Lighthouse, offshore to the South. Note the rocky beach that surrounds the peninsula. Many of those rocks are fossils--it's well worth a good look!

Climb back down and stand directly beneath the iron bars of the windows on the northern side of the lighthouse. Remembering the number of stairs you counted, walk that many paces (1 pace = 2 steps) due North. Stop a few feet shy of the iron grill--you don't want to burn yourself! Find a compass bearing of 75 degrees and walk over to a copse of trees. Among these trees you'll find your treasure, named for the lighthouse which for many years helped protect the sailors on their "root" into Little Bay De Noc.
