Welcome to the Great Sacandaga Lake situated in part Saratoga County and Fulton County. You will be traveling to one of the many creeks that feeds into the lake in search of the Sand Creek Bear box. So named, because over the years there have been bear sightings along the shore of the creek. The latest sighting was last year when I encountered a mother black bear and her twin cubs in the area.

Start in the little town of Edinburg, which isn't much bigger than the four corner crossroad in its center. Turn on North Shore Road (State Route 4)in front of the old white Methodist church and travel approximately 5 miles north toward the direction of Hadley.

After you have traveled the approximate 5 miles, you will head down a slight hill and curve and travel over the bridge crossing Sand Creek and enter the Town of Day. There are banners on the edge of the road saying Welcome to The Town of Day. Immediately on your right is the Saratoga County Recreation Area and Park. This is a great spot to pull in and park, bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the lake. There's wonderful fishing here too!

After parking walk back out to the road and recross the bridge. There is no sign to signify Sand Creek, however there is a road sign across from the park that reads Sand Creek Road.

Once you have crossed the bridge, look for the three boulders on your right and walk between them to follow the trail along side of Sand Creek. This area once used to be part of the park, but years ago was left to return to the wilds, however there are still old rotted picnic tables and fireplaces left to remind people of earlier fun times.

From the 3 boulders, 70 paces (one step per pace)will bring you to a big pine tree with a dead pine lying at its base.

50 more paces will have you follow the woodland trail past the pine tree and over to a stone embankment bridge. From the center of the stone bridge you should be able to see a big overturned stump to the N/NE.

Once you arrive at the overturned stump, find the pine with the faded yellow trail blaze and line yourself up so your line of vision is with the stump and tree with the trail blaze.

Look past the tree with the trail blaze and go 23 paces in a straight line to the old cement fireplace. It is covered with moss and there is an old picnic table falling apart nearby. Look for the board that is laying across where the fire should be. Underneath of the board is the Sand Creek Bear Box.

Have a great time enjoying the Sacandage Lake area and just be sure to keep an eye out for Mama Bear!
