Distance: ½ mile RT
Difficulty: very easy
This box is the fourth in our series, highlighting points of interest along the Arizona Trail.
Background
The Patagonia area is a playground for Southern Arizonans. It is a popular weekend or day-trip destination for wine lovers, bird-watchers, hikers, campers, and fisher-folk.
To the Trailhead
Entering Patagonia from the north (on Route 82) cross over Sonoita Creek and take the first left at Taylor Ave. Take the next left at Harshaw Road and go 2.8 miles to the trailhead parking lot.
To the Box
Find the information kiosk and take the trail starting behind it. After passing some short, blackish cliffs you’ll come to a T-junction next to a knarly stump. A right turn here would take you across the wash, but you want to go left, steeply up the hill about 10 yards. At the crest of the second hill, locate a rust-colored gate at 75* from north and a radio tower at 205*. Half-way up the hill behind you is a large black rock with a tree growing out of the middle of it. The box is nestled at the bottom of the tree.
