Northfield Campus Tour #2.

Archived on St. Patrick's Day, 2007. Some of the landmarks changed. In particular, the sculpture near Steensland was replaced by a construction shack and the hymnals in the chapel have been replaced by the new red ones so the directions have been obviated.

In this tour you'll proceed from East to West through several locations on campus collecting digits 0,1,..,9 for A thru J needed to locate the letterbox. Length of circuit is a little over a mile mostly on tree-lined, paved paths.

There are two colleges in Northfield. You should find the westerly one and it's most easterly building, which is also its oldest. Every college ought to have such an
OldMain building. This one was first constructed in 18AA. From the east side you should have a fine view of the city. And be sure to peek through the grid under the east porch! Let B = # of dormers on the third storey as seen from the west. To the west of Old Main is the second oldest building
Steensland, constructed in 19CD; and note the number E of columns it has. Also take note of the sculpture to its west which contains F coulee hats/gold pans/cultivating disks/satellite dishes. Save your values of the digits for the letters A,B,C,D,E and F in the box below. Next walk along paths in a west, then northwest, then north direction for a total of DFC paces to

The Para-Pillars sculpture, by Jeff Barber. You'd think that the sculpture would contain two pillars, but that's wrong. Let G = the actual number of pillars. Continue straight west for another BB paces to a table where you may sit and watch the ships go by. Let H be the number of ships on the table. To the northwest about HGE paces is

Boe Memorial Chapel, which was built in 1953. It's open all year, except those weekends when school is not in session. Services are held every day of the week, except Saturdays, during the school year. It's also one of several locations for the many excellent concerts and recitals held on campus. Go inside. Meditate a while. Note how many stained class windows there are above the main entrance. Let I be that number.

Look up the hymn numbers for

  • ______ X "From East to West", (check: X = FB.)
  • ______ Y "How Good, Lord, to be Here", and
  • ______ Z "Beautiful Savior" (the signature piece of the college's famous choir).
Or, if the chapel is closed, or you think it might be at the time of your visit, see
LBW where you can find an alphabetical index to the tunes (and download and play any that are not copyrighted.) You'll want those numbers to determine the next stops.

Continue to the northwest for about X+Y paces. You should find yourself in the presence of some other sculptures. Let J be the number of letters in the sculptor's last name (also the number of letters in the last name of the first president for whom this complex is named as well as that of the artist for whom the adjacent building is named.) As a check you should now possess a distinct digit 0-9 for each letter A-J. Also check Z = IHJ.) Take time to visit the galleries in the
Art Center.

Head straight west, as best you can, and down hill. Eventually, you should find a large parking lot on
your right and woods on the left. After the last lamp post on the left there will be a wide grassy
path headed in direction 2Yº. Take it for about Z-Y paces where a path turns to direction ; follow that for the remaining Y paces until you come to a dish in a cage. (At Xb paces more you would encounter the remnants of some tennis courts.)

The letterbox is under a middle-sized, multi-trunked tree near the southeast corner of the cage. At the letterbox site, runners, skiers, dogs and their owners can come out of nowhere. So sit down, and look like you're doing some appropriate scientific research. Head east to return to your starting point.
