Clues
Terrain difficulty: 3or 3.5-- some up and down hill
Clue difficulty: 4
by Tuppence of Flying Squirrel Squad (old trail name was Rocky)
NEEDED: You will need a COMPASS and you may want gloves. The compass readings are approximate. This should be easy to find if you can work a compass.
DIRECTIONS to Plantes Ferry Park
From I-90 take the Argonne exit, go North on Argonne past Trent, through Millwood to the intersection of Argonne and Upriver Drive, turn right onto Upriver( in front of the library). Keep going past the parking lot for the centennial trail, the next parking lot on the right, should be for the park. The entrance to the lot is easy to miss so slow way down and get into the turn lane shortly after you see the park sign.
THE HISTORY SIGN
Once in the lot, park and get out, the road to the left goes to soccer fields do not go there, to the right is the park do not go there yet. Do walk kind of South, toward the maintenance building for the Park, next to the green no parking gate, is a trail between 2 trees, go past the building to toward the back. Do not stop to admire the razor wire,(you can if you want of course), walk to the history of the park sign .
Where is Antoine Plante? Study the history sign and the map on it to help you find him. (He is buried in Montana, but I mean where is he in the Park ?) Find him.

NOW THAT YOU’VE FOUND ANTOINE approach him from behind do not stand in front of him it’s dangerous (for two reasons). What direction is Antoine looking ? From Antoine’s left foot take 2 steps back aim the compass at his medallion. Take a reading write it down somewhere _______.

NOW TURN AROUND, and climb straight UP the steep trail in the middle. You will come out on top of the ridge. On top turn LEFT (west) at the crossroads, walk past another crossroad, then just before you come to a lone pine tree you will see a trail that goes down hill on the RIGHT ( little bit right and north about 60). At the bottom of the hill there is another crossroad turn LEFT 330 degrees .Take this trail down to a Y take the RIGHT fork into a gully keep to the west. If you see the STONE CIRCLE you are going the right way. Just keep on following the trail until you find the paved path.

AT THE PAVED PATH , turn LEFT travel down it until you get to an obelisk , READ the obelisk to answer the questions.
Answer these questions: 1. How many letters are there in the first name of the man who built the first bridge? _______ 2. What is the cardinal number in the third line of the 1855 segment?____

RETURN TO THE STONE CIRCLE ,once you are standing near or in the circle head down the trail south at 120 degrees. Until you come to another smaller "circle "of 5 stones, you can stand in the middle of this circle, one stone is huge compared to the others.(HINT:There are other rocks around the area you need to look for a set of rocks that fit the description in the clues.) Stand on the huge stone, then step off the left end of the big stone the number of steps (equal to the answer to the 1855 question). Then turn to the direction that Antoine was looking. Walk the number of steps in the bridge question. That should put you pretty close to it. Someone moved the rocks ,so look under the rock to the left of the one that is now in front of you.

It’s a busy park on the weekends so try not to be observed. Please, put it back exactly where you found it there are a couple of other similar places near it, and try not to disturb the plants around it.
(The last time I checked this someone seemed to have turned the boulders over, unbelievably, which didn’t make me very happy, since I ask people to try not to disturb the plants. So, I updated the clues a bit. Let me know if this is too difficult to find. :-) - Tuppence
