If Howe Caverns is the venerable granddaddy of cave systems in Schoharie County, then Secret Caverns is the young, hip upstart of the family. Wildly promoted with funky hand painted billboards, Secret Caverns never seems to take itself very seriously. Sure, Secret Caverns may bill itself as educational, but any business that’s painted to look like a bat, with a lolling tongue for a doormat is certainly not going to be dull!

While driving around photographing the wonderfully over-the-top, yet brilliantly painted billboards, I was lucky enough to meet one of the artists at work. The Secret Letterbox is an homage to his work, and the spirit of Secret Caverns

To find this letterbox, follow the directions to Secret Caverns. All those billboards won't allow you to get lost.

(I understand, from looking at the Howe Caverns website, that online directions are a real mess, and are not recommended. Follow those billboards, instead!)

Once you're on Route 7, and you’ve passed Howe Caverns on Howe Caves Road, keep any eye out for Sagendorf Corners Road. Shortly after you cross Sagendorf Corners Road, there will be a billboard on your right, directly across the street from Cave Country Greenery. You can either pull off the road, or just park in Secret Cavern’s parking lot, (which is just a tiny bit further down the road,) and walk back to the billboard.

Check out that billboard! The bats! The signature cave man! The frankly awesome paint handling! Pretty cool, huh? How about those Babylonian fossil creatures? How about that ledge on the bottom? Hey wait a second, what’s lurking under those creatures?

As a side note, I have to admit that I royally screwed up the carving of this stamp. This was going to be my first attempt at carving type. I drew the letters myself, without using any computer fonts. I transferred the image, and everything looked good. But when I was inking the image prior to carving, I must have completely spaced out, and somehow transposed two of the letters. Did I notice it at the time? Oh nooooooo….. Did I notice it the first seven or so times I stamped this image? Not me…… When I finally realized my mistake, I was really disgusted with myself, until I had a moment of inspiration, and thought of the Gutenberg Press. Moveable Type! How revolutionary! I carefully cut out the offending letters chopped them apart, and shoved them back into place. Amazingly, the letters lined up quite nicely, even after my hack surgery.
