Difficulty: Easy
Distance: 5-10 minute one way, easy walk
Stamp: Hand Carved
Oak Creek Canyon is home to numerous trails, Slide Rock State Park and beautiful campgrounds. Slide Rock State Park is located on the site of the Pendley Homestead. Frank Pendley planted his first apple orchard here in 1912. This orchard probably produced the seed that grew the tree where the box is hidden!
Directions: At the junction of 179 and 89A in Sedona, turn north onto 89A. Travel 11.5 miles to the Cave Springs Campground (rumor has it the sign is missing) entrance. Turn left into the entrance and park at the trailhead immediately to the right.
To the box: Take the trail furthest to the right. Begin your paces at the rock that is at the beginning of the trail. 130 paces down the double trail, there is a dead tree on the left. Walking past this tree, continue to where the double trail turns into a single trail. A short distance ahead there is an intersection. Standing in the middle of the intersection, locate the small copse of trees at 20 degrees. Walk on the trail to the western side of this copse where the trail forks. Bear right. On the north side of the same copse, there is another intersection. Turn right. You are looking for an apple tree at 135 degrees. Go to the back of the tree and look under the rock and tree debris at the base of the tree. Please make sure the rock is securely on the box when you rehide to keep a critter from dragging it away.
Beware of poison ivy.
The standard warning applies when reaching for letterboxes in Arizona:
Rattlesnakes and “mean” things abound,
please take a stick and poke around.
It may save your hand or your life
and help to avoid loads of strife!
