The Yellow Rose Letterbox

In 1936, Texas created its first roadside picnic areas, which provided shaded tables and benches for travelers, but little more. With the establishment of the Federal Beautification Act of 1965, the Texas Highway Department began building roadside safety rest areas. The philosophy then was to build as many rest areas as possible with a limited supply of funds.

This box is located at the Texas Welcome Center on Interstate 20 between Shreveport, LA and Waskom, TX. The information center is open from 8-5 or 8-6, depending on which time of year you visit, and they have pamphlets and other literature containing information on various sights and tourist attractions in Texas. There is also 24 hour security, and of course, you can get to the letterbox at any time of the day or night. suggested colors: yellow and Blue

To the Box:

1. Traveling west on I-20, pull into the Welcome Center/Rest Stop. As you pull into the parking lot, park on the right hand side.

2. You will notice three picnic pavilions on your right.

3. From the middle pavilion, look southeast to four large bushes.

4. The second bush from the left holds the box. The box is placed in the branches approximately three feet off the ground on the east side of the bush.

5. Please be discreet and rehide the box well. I'd appreciate an e-mail to let me know the status of this box.
