This letterbox was placed as the final activity for the outdoor unit for the 2005 Whidbey Island Girl Scout Day camp themed “Trails to Success”. All of the girls attending the camp learned orienteering and made their own stamps and log books to learn about the hobby of letterboxing. Everyone especially enjoyed finding this letterbox on the last day of camp. The carved stamp included in the box is a replica of the patch that was given to all participants of the day camp. Happy letterboxing!

Directions: Go to Ft. Casey State Park, located near Coupeville, WA and the Keystone Ferry. There is only one entrance to the park. There is a $5 parking fee if you do not have an annual pass to the WA State Parks. The park offers tours of a historic lighthouse, tours and self-guided walks around historic artillery bunkers. There are camping and picnic areas as well as public restrooms and beach access. This is a fun park for the whole family with lots of sights (man-made and wildlife) for everyone to enjoy. One particular caution with the woods in this park is the presence of nettles during some seasons. However, when placing this box during peak nettles season this spring no nettles were noticed near this trail.

****Hand Carved Stamp*** Looks best with multi color pens.
This is a medium difficulty box that is friendly to kids and dogs. It is not handicap accessible. However many parts of Ft. Casey State Park are accessible and enjoyable to all.

Clues:
Go into the entrance of the park and take the first right into the picnic area. Find a parking spot and start the clues:
1. Go to the center of the vehicular Merry-go-round.
2. Start on a heading of 250° towards the trail,
3. from the sign at the beginning of the trail, take about 10 child-sized steps and turn right onto the 1st game trail.
4. Along the way you will step over 3 small logs (watch your step and don’t trip).
5. Before you get to one as big around as a basketball lying across the path. Go around the cut end of the tree and continue along the path
6. Follow the “S” shape of the trail around and past a huckleberry bush
7. To the roots of a blown-over tree with a fern growing in it.
8. From the edge of that root clump take 10 steps on a 320° heading to get to the next trail.
9. Turn North and follow the snaky tree on the ground.
10. When you come to a blown-over tree, uprooted with a large root mound, and with bark fragments all around, go North again towards the sunken area.
11. Go around the sunken area on the left side. On the far side of the sunken area there are several paths to choose from.
12. Take the path towards the “Elephant Skull” heading East.
13. At the Skull there are also 6 wood “stalagmites” in the area, from the center of this area follow the trail heading 60° and
14. take a left at the fork in the trail
15. As you continue on your path you will step over four small trees lying across the trail.
16. Then you will see the A-Frame fire pit on your right..
17. AFTER the fire pit, follow the trail and take a left at the log (don’t step over) and
18. A right at the next (don’t step over).
19. Go into the tunnel of branches
20. To find the amazing mountain in the woods.
21. In the small crevasse directly under the point of Pride Rock, find your prize.
To get home: Head South away from Pride Rock and you may rest yourself after a job well done.

This is a public park with lots of people passing through each day, please be very discreet about uncovering and recovering the letterbox. Do your stamping away from the hiding spot. Please make sure the letterbox stays double bagged and sealed tightly so that rains do not damage it. To get home: Head South away from Pride Rock and you may rest yourself after a job well done.

Please let me know when you find the letterbox and the condition it is in.
