This letterbox is dedicated to Bruce Springsteen.

For this letterbox you will gather clues in one location, and then use those clues to find the letterbox in another nearby location.

Print out a detailed map of Springsteen’s hometown, Freehold, from Mapquest. It must show the street names.

Bring a pencil, paper, and compass.

As you find the clues, you may want to write them down as shown below to keep them organized for use later when you’re actually looking for the letterbox:

Clue #1 – XXXX
Clue #2 – XXXX

Etc.

Find a good place to park in Freehold. The city is not very large, so anywhere you park is not far from your starting point.

By the way, there’s a number of good places to eat at or to have a coffee in Freehold.

CLUE #1

From Springsteen’s song, “Freehold”:

“I was born right here on Randolph Street in Freehold
Here right behind that big red maple in Freehold”

We will begin at that big red maple tree.

The house in which Bruce lived when he was born was removed to make way for the expansion of a church parking lot.

However, the “red maple” tree he refers to is still there.

(It is not really a “red maple”, but it is a big tree).

Go to the corner of Randolph and McLean Streets, where the church is.

Head South on Randolph Street.

Go to 89 Randolph Street, and face the house. This is the house that was next to Bruce’s house.

Just to the left (North) of 89 Randolph is a driveway, and then the “red maple” tree, right next to the sidewalk.

Bruce’s house stood behind that tree, where there is now the church parking lot.

I was told that Bruce carved his name in the tree, but that may just be a rumor. I couldn’t find his name.

If you’re standing on the sidewalk looking at the tree, you will notice a streetlight behind you. Look up at the light. There is a number at the bottom of the light.

CLUE #1: Add the number 1 to the number on the light. This is your first clue. E.g., if the number you see on the light is 37, then your clue is 38.

CLUE #2

From Springsteen’s song, “Freehold”:

“I remember running up the street past the convent to the church in Freehold”

Run North on Randolph Street past the convent to the church.

Above the door to the church is a stained glass window, consisting of three parts: The left, middle, and right-most parts.

The left part is of a flower (I think!), the middle part is a crucifix.

What does the right-most part depict?

Below are the four choices. Find the correct choice. The corresponding direction is Clue #2:

Lamb ----> Direction is North
Arrow ---> Direction is East
Shield ---> Direction is South
Anchor --> Direction is West

Clue #3

Walk East on McLean toward South Street

Walk South on South Street to Institute Street.

Walk a couple of short blocks East on Institute to the corner of Parker and Institute Streets. On that corner is a duplex. The left half of the duplex is address 39 ½.

This is where Bruce lived as a youngster.

When you’re facing the front of the house from the sidewalk, what direction are you facing (North, East, South or West)? That direction is Clue #3.

Clue #4

Go back to South Street, and walk about a block North on South Street, to 68 South Street. This is the left half of a duplex.

This is where Bruce lived as a teenager.

When you’re facing the front of the house from the sidewalk, what direction are you facing (North, East, South, or West)? That direction is Clue #4.

Clue #5

Walk South about a block on South Street to the front of St. Rose of Lima Elementary School.

From Springsteen’s song, “Freehold”:

“I got a good Catholic education in Freehold”

At the entrance to the school is a large stone pictogram (8 feet by 8 feet) depicting eight symbols.

For example, at the center is a crucifix.

At the lower left is a menorah with three candles.

What is in the lower right?

Below are the four choices. Find the correct choice. The corresponding direction is Clue #5:

Pyramid with eye in center ----------> Direction is North
Bleeding Heart ----------------------> Direction is East
St. Sebastian covered with arrows --> Direction is South
Bear and child ----------------------> Direction is West

Now it’s time to find the box.

Drive to the Visitor Center at Monmouth Battlefield State Park, which is about 3 miles West of town.

In front of the Visitor Center, to the right, is a statue of General von Steuben.

Below the statue is a plaque.

The first paragraph on that plaque reads:

“Friedrich Wilhelm August Heinrich Ferdinand Baron von Steuben was born …”

Assign numbers to the words in that paragraph.

Word #1 Friedrich
Word #2 Wilhelm
Word #3 August

Etc.

Use Clue #1 to find the corresponding word.

For example, if Clue #1 was the number 4, then the word is “Heinrich”.

If Clue #1 was the number 7, then the word is “von”.

Remember, Clue #1 was the number on the light PLUS 1, not just the number on the light.

When you find the word, note the first letter of the word. It is the same letter as the letter that begins one of the four main Cardinal directions of the compass (North, East, South, or West).

Face in that direction.

There is a tree that is 40 paces away (2 steps = 1 pace).

Note: there are several smaller trees near the target tree.

The target tree has two trunks that are each about 2 feet in diameter. It has several thick limbs that extend outwards, and is about 40 feet tall.

Walk to the tree.

Face in the direction you got from Clue #2.

There is a tree that is 25 paces away.

This tree is a pine tree. Walk to that tree.

Face in the direction you got from Clue #3.

There is a tree that is 15 paces away.

This tree has two trunks, each 1 foot in diameter. Walk to that tree.

Face in the direction you got from Clue #4.

There is a tree that is 20 paces away.

This Maple tree has a 2 ft diameter trunk, and is the largest tree in that general area. Walk to that tree.

Face in the direction you got from Clue #5.

There is a tree that is 10 paces away.

This tree has a 1 ft diameter trunk. This tree is on the edge of an area filled with bushes and trees. Walk toward that tree. Look behind the tree at the base. Well hidden under lots of leaves and sticks is your goal.

Please take the time to hide this box well when you’re done. Thanks!
