Happy Camper Letterbox

*** NOTE: This box may be missing. Someone went to look for it May 2008 and was unable to find it. ****

Go to Nisene Marks State Park in Aptos, CA
Pick up a free trail map and find the West Ridge Trail Camp on the map, and choose your route to get there.

The route we took was as follows:

Park at Porter Family Picnic Area.
Take the Aptos Creek Fire Road to the Aptos Creek Trail.
Take the Aptos Creek Trail to the Big Slide Trail.
Take the Big Slide Trail to the Aptos Creek Fire Road.
Take the Aptos Creek Fire Road to the Sand Point Overlook.
Here the road goes West and East/North. Take the West branch, which heads downhill.
This leads directly to the West Ridge Trail Camp.

There are shorter routes, probably less strenous too, but I haven't tried any of them so I can't say for sure. The route we took has some strenuous places along it, namely from where you see the switchbacks on the trailmap along the Aptos Creek Trail, and up the Big Slide Trail.

Once you reach the trail camp, continue 45 paces along the Fire Road past the trail camp (heading west).
Look for a large green fallen tree on your left, a little ways off the trail.
Go over to the end of the tree closest to you and on the other side of the tree (the left side of the tree).
Walk 11 paces along the tree and look for a small hole in the tree.
What you seek is hidden in this hole, covered with leaves to hide it.

Bring lots of water, we went through a lot of water on this hike.

Be sure to check out the clues for the other letterbox in the area too, that might be a consideration when choosing your route.

When we say "a pace" in our clues, we mean 1 step with 1 foot.

Please rehide the letterbox carefully, well covered with leaves/bark after you've stamped-in. Please contact me if the letterbox needs maintenance or if you have any questions.
