A LETTERBOX FOR HIKERS, BIKERS, AND HORSE RIDERS!

The Darling Downs was one of the earliest areas of European settlement in Queensland Australia, with squatters taking up land from 1840. The discovery of early routes over the Dividing Range at Gormans Gap, south of Toowoomba, and the Toll Bar Route in Toowoomba itself provided a supply line to the coastal settlement of Moreton Bay, now Brisbane.

The very top section of Gormans Gap Rd is known as the "Camel's Hump", due to the topography there. In order to find this letterbox, you need to either climb up or down the Camel's Hump.

If you are walking, biking or horse riding, travel south from Toowoomba on the New England Hwy, turn left into Preston Boundary Rd, and after about 4.5kms turn left into Gormans Gap Rd. 500m down this road is a Cairn dedicated to the pioneers of the Darling Downs. Park here and commence the hunt! (Horse floats can unload here as well.)

If walking or biking, look for the "Camel's Hump" sign and follow track for 600m. Can you see the Camel's Hump? Go down the hump (very steep) and find the letterbox at the bottom, only 7 paces off the track opposite the fallen tree. Continue your trek or bike ride down the range, turn right onto Kiepes Rd and follow track. At T-section, turn right onto bitumen road and head uphill. This is Hell Hole Creek Rd, and will bring you back onto Preston Boundary Rd. Go straight ahead, turn right into Gormans Gap Rd, and return to your vehicle. Total approx 10kms.

If horse riding, ride back from your transport along Gormans Gap Rd, turn left onto Preston Boundary Rd. At next fork take left option onto Hell Hole Creek Rd. Approx 50m down hill take bulldozed dirt track on right hand side of the road along fenceline. When track returns to the bitumen, turn left through cockie's gate onto wide dirt track. Follow this road past house on right, through gate, then turn left going uphill. At top of rise turn left again at Gormans Gap Rd marker. Take small dirt track up the ridgeline. After three short sharp climbs, and before the last major climb, look for the letterbox just 7 paces off the track opposite the fallen tree. (Look for burnt-out tree stump.)

After you find the letterbox, continue up the Camel's Hump, taking the right-hand route. This is a fairly steep climb, but most horses will handle it just fine! Remember to check out the view from the top.

Continue along the track, and you will make your way back to your starting point, and your transport. Enjoy your ride in this beautiful part of the world!

PS... this letterbox is in the photo above!
