This area of Madison county has some great backwoods picnic spots & mud holes. It's known around Madison as a great area to go mudding. It's popular with ATVs, Jeeps, & 4 wheel drive pickups. I planted this letterbox on a trip mudding with friends. This letterbox is easily accessible. It is not necessary to do any muddin' to find it(though it might make your time here more fun).

From Rt. 29 in Madison: Take 230 West toward Stanardsville, VA to Wolftown Mercantile. Turn right onto Rt. 662 N. (Graves Mill Rd.) (to * for more directions)

From Rt. 33 in Stanardsville: Take 230 East toward Madison, VA to Wolftown Mercantile on your left. Turn left onto Rt. 662 N. (Graves Mill Road) (to * for more directions)

*Continue on Graves Mill Road. Graves Mill Road will turn to the right while Bluff Mtn. Road will lead straight ahead. Take Bluff Mtn. Road. Soon you will reach the Middle River Parking Area (right where the blacktop ends & the gravel starts. Park in this parking area. Across the road is a short trail leading down to the river. While walking down this trail look to your left. About 6 ft off the trail you will see a large boulder. The letterbox is hidden behind this boulder at its base beneath some rocks. Please be careful to hide it well when you are finished and I hope you enjoy the hand carved stamp.

If you follow the gravel road you will wind up through the mountain passing some great mud holes (not usually on the road itself) and some nice picnic spots with fire rings just waiting for a campfire. When I was a kid we even came up here a few times and found a few swimming holes in the river.
