NOTE: This Letterbox was reported missing on June 6/09.

DESCRIPTION

The town of Oliver is located about 40 km. south of Penticton in the heart of what may well be Canada’s best wine producing region.

Although Canadian wines are generally not up to world standards, except for their aggressive promotional policies and above average pricing structure, Oliver, and its southern neighbour Osoyoos, are both homes to a few wineries that are well above Canadian standards.

There is a nice biking/hiking trail running from the McAlpine Bridge over the Okanagan River north of Oliver south past Oliver to Osoyoos. This trail is called the ‘International Bicycling and Hiking Society Trail’ and runs alongside the Okanagan River.

This Letterbox is an easy find south of Oliver and east on Road 9, also called 326 Avenue.

From highway 97, exit at Road 9 (326 Ave.) and proceed a short distance to the International Bike and Hike Trail which crosses Road 9 just before the bridge over the Okanagan River.

CLUES

At the point where the International Bicycling and Hiking Trail crosses Road 9, look north down the trail.

There is a blue locked steel gate across the trail 14 paces north from Road 9.

Just past the gate, look left (west) where there is a tree and 3 large rocks.

Standing at the gate, observe the rock on the left, or south side of the rock group.

The International Bike & Hike Trail Letterbox is located under the left (south) side of this smaller of the 3 rocks. The Letterbox is protected by another smaller rock.

If you are biking south from Oliver, simply stop at Road 9, turn around and follow the above instructions.
