Clues revised: 9/9/2007

These boxes have been placed along Rock Creek Trail in Hillsboro, Oregon. This is a sensitive wetland area, and the boxes have been hidden only along the main trail and side trails. You shouldn’t have to take more than a couple of steps off of whatever trail you’re on to find these boxes.

One plant that seems to thrive unchecked along this trail is the blackberry bush. Gloves are a must!

Also, while I have borrowed the names of the characters from the Disney movie, these stamps do not bear the Disney characters—only their species. UPDATE: I have been the fortunate victim of letterboxing mischief--a generous soul has carved out stamps that look JUST like the Disney characters and included them in the boxes. Two-fer-one bonus!

Getting there: Rock Creek Trail is accessible at several points, and crosses both Cornell Road and Evergreen Parkway. I suggest parking at Tanasbourne Business Park on Cornell; the end with the Police station is closest to the Cornell trailhead, under the really big U.S. Flag.

CLUES to "Madagascar in Hillsboro" Boxes:

#1) ALIVE AND WELL 9/9/07: Shortly after beginning at the trailhead, you’ll see a large ponderosa on your right. 15 steps past the ponderosa and across the trail you may be able to just make out an old livestock fence. There is a tree with many shooters here, and what looks like a moss-covered plank leaning against the trees. Melman peers from the branches here. **Please replace Melman so he remains camoflauged from the trail, thanks!

#2) MISSING***UPDATE:**** Logs marking this location are still in place, but overgrown with blackberries. Box is MISSING though.*** Cross the lucky chevrons and take the winding path left from the bridge. Clear the curves and look for logs on the right. Marty is nestled across the trail to your left, behind the log under the blackberries. **Re-hide Marty well!

#3) MISSING**Return to the bridge and travel causeway across the wetlands. Follow the bark trail. Two paces off the trail to the right is a stump lying on its side. Alex is sheltered here, hopefully staying dry. **Be sure to replace the grasses across the entrance to Alex’s cave when you’re done, thanks! **UPDATE: Somebody MOWED the grass around the cave, hence Alex's disappearance.**

#4) Back to the main trail, and cross the creek where the Indiana limit would not support a small, 7,000 pound African elephant! It will support you, though. Head left at the end on the creek trail, which leads to Bearing Tree N 81E-24. Gloria is being guarded by two slender sentinels nearby, underneath sticks and brush.

BONUS BOX: ******MISSING***UPDATE: Cedar Trees where these were nestled are down, and I couldn't find the box in them anywhere. Sorry!******* This can be dangerous, even if you are careful. Return to the main trail, don’t look back! Let the Ponderosas guide you—bypass two wooden creek fences. This is the dangerous part: crossing the hazardous game trail. Rock Creek Trail does cross Evergreen Parkway here, but you might feel safer detouring to a designated crosswalk. Once across, find American Tower on the right side of the trail. Duck and go right (you might even need to crawl here during blackberry season). A silverback relative of Phil’s spends his days here.

OR go back to your car and drive on 185th, across 26 to Rock Creek Road, and pick up the trail there. Park at the trailhead, cross under 26, follow the clues on the left side of the trail.
