* 04/13/06 - THIS LETTERBOX IS MISSING IN ACTION. I have heard from multiple sources that this box is no longer there. I have not had time to verify. I will update this listing when I have further information. Sorry!

Duluth is graced with a large number of "inner-city" parks and trails. This letterbox is the second in a collection of letterboxes I plan to place in order to highlight these beautiful areas.

The Bunnies and Abandoned Buildings letterbox is placed on the Park Point trail, a 4 mile trail beginning at the end of Park Point. Just keep driving down Minnesota Ave. until you get to Sky Harbor Airport. Park in any of the spaces outside the fence. If you would like, download the trail's map at http://www.ci.duluth.mn.us/city/parksandrecreation/trailmaps/ParkPoint_new.pdf The whole trip should take about an hour and 30 min. The terrain is fairly level but sandy, making it a bit challenging.

Starting from the official "Park Point Nature Trail" sign, follow the service road along the fence. At the very end you will come to a boardwalk; cross it and take the trail into the woods. A bit of walking will bring you to a clearing with water pump stations. Following another service road will bring you back into the woods.

The trail will begin feeling long at this point. To keep you entertained, watch for the following landmarks:
- The only privately owned cabin on Park Point.
- A solid rock cube.
- A cylinder made of metal and cement.
- The ruins of a lighthouse, the base of which serves
as the "zero" point for all survey maps of Lake
Superior.

And finally, you will come to the Number 7 trail marker next to a large, abandoned warehouse. Take the trail to the front (bayside) of the building.

Face the front of the warehouse, looking at the "USCHS Depot" imprinted in its face. Walk to the staircase on your right. Stand at the bottom step, turn, and face the woods. Take 55 paces straight down the path into the woods.

Here, you should be at the ruins of an outhouse. On the outside are the labels "His" and "Hers". Up in the rafters of the "His" side should be the letterbox. Depending on your height, you may need a stick to get it down.

As always, please make sure to put things back just like you found them.

Now, about the bunnies... if you aren't a Duluth native or have lived under a rock for the past few years, you can read all about it on the MPR website, http://news.minnesota.publicradio.org/features/200005/08_kelleherb_bunnies-m/

Enjoy!
