Fire observation towers are staffed during periods of heightened fire danger. They are situated to command a wide view, permitting the observer to locate smoke from potential wildfires.

This letterbox is near the base of the Washburn Fire Tower. From Washburn, travel about 7 miles Northwest on County Road C. Forest Road 439 is a sand road that leads East from Valhalla Ski Area. Take FR 439 1.6 miles to a paved single lane road that goes up the hill to the observation tower. (You will pass an unpaved road about 0.4 miles West of the paved road. The unpaved road goes directly to the tower, but is passable by all terrain vehicles only.) The paved road winds 0.4 miles up to the tower.

Some of the area below the tower has recently been clear-cut. One mature red pine tree stands about 100 feet NNW of the base of the tower. The letterbox is in a small clump of oak suckers about 10 feet downslope from the red pine. The walking is a little rugged.
