Love’s Lookout Letterbox

Love’s Lookout is a scenic view found in Jacksonville, Texas. The east side overlooks a broad valley-a wide expanse of beautiful scenery, of about 30-35 miles. Some Texans believe that on a clear day, one can see as far as Louisiana.

In 1904, Wesley Love bought 133.4 acres of land for a peach orchard that eventually expanded to 600 acres. In 1934 the city of Jacksonville purchased 25 acres for a W.P.A project. The park become one of East Texas’ favorite attractions. For more than 20 years it served the area as a hub for local and tourist attractions.

In 2004, major renovations occurred at Love’s Lookout. It now boasts a 5500 square foot facility housing restrooms, vending machines, an information center and a sheriff’s substation. Along the lookout ridge are five picnic pavilions which resemble the tomato shed style of the main building which authenticates Jacksonville’s heritage.

Be sure to take your camera for pictures of this scenic view. For more information, visit

From Jacksonville, head north on Highway 69. The park is located 3.5 miles north of Alexander Street, or Highway 175 in Jacksonville. You will see a sign that reads REST AREA/SCENIC OVERLOOK.

1. Park in front of the main building. With your back to the Blue Star Memorial, turn right (north) and walk along the sidewalk to the northernmost picnic pavilion.

2. From the north corner of this pavilion, walk 11 steps to an opening in the wall. Walk down these steps.

3. Walk three steps and you will see a small post and a divided path. Take the path to the right.

4. Walk five steps down this path and face a tree on the right. The tree has red paint on it. Look at the base of this tree under a large rock, leaves, and branches. Here you will find the letterbox.

5. Please re-cover and hide well. Please e-mail me to let me know the status of this box.
