This box is an easy journey from Route 81. The area is part of the Finger Lakes Trails system and can be accessed from the Morgan State Forest area ( See www.localhikes.com/Hikes/TinkerFalls_8160.asp) or from the trailhead on Route 91. Wear sneakers/boots rather than sandals as there is some scrambling over rocks. Not good for the smallest children. Bug spray always a good idea as well. The falls is only a quarter mile in from this side and is most dramatic in the spring, but it's fun to go behind the water no matter what the season. There is a first finder certificate in this box...as well as a little "companion."

Map to Turn onto 91 South heading toward
Tinker Falls

Directions: From north or south, take Route 81 and get off exit 14, the Tully exit. Head east on Route 80 through the village of Tully, then Apulia Station and Apulia (4.3 miles). Turn south onto Route 91 and drive 2 miles and you will see the Labrador Hollow Unique Wildlife Area. This is a good stop to make on your way out! Continue driving 1.2 miles and you will pass the Cortland County sign and see a pull off near some hiking symbol signs. Park in this pulloff. The trailhead is across the street near the wooden post (sign in missing).

Clues: Follow the trail along the creek until you come to the memorial bench. You are very close now. The trail starts to disappear but as you view the falls you can easily see that you can climb up the center of the stream bed from rock to rock. Do this, bearing to the right and continue past the huge, flat top rocks at the base of the falls. Scramble up the right side and at just at the base of the falls you can see moss covered rocks where the water runs down. Below these moss covered rocks to the right you will see a massive long rock. Under the right end you will see pointed rocks guiding you to the hiding spot.

When you have rehidden the box, you can climb to the left or right of the falls area and walk on the shelf behind the falls. Getting up there is the hardest part, but the shelf is actually a lot wider than it looks from down below. Extreme adventurers can even climb higher and go to the top of the falls from here, but it is more fun to hike to it from the Spruce Pond/Morgan Forest side ( See www.localhikes.com/Hikes/TinkerFalls_8160.asp). Let me know how your hike went! lockwench@yahoo.com
