Little Country Hike

Box #1 has been replaced as of 11/27/2008. Be sure to conceal it well and securely when replacing. Thanks.

CLUES REVISED SLIGHTLY 11/20/2005.

This series is placed as a birthday surprise for my granddaughter, Squishy Fishy. Please bring your own ink for the first 3 mini-boxes. The logbook is in box #4.

Directions: From Route 9, take exit 3 toward Centerbrook. Go west on 154 staying straight at the traffic light by Cumberland Farms. Pass Trinity Lutheran Church. Look for the sign for Falls River Farm and make a right turn onto Falls River Road. Follow to the end where there is a parking lot for Falls River Preserve.

Clues:

Walk through the wooden fence and go right at the end of the initial wide dirt road. Please stay on the trail at this point, as it is private property on both sides. Follow the arrows pointing the way to the preserve. At the fork, go left and after 7-8 more paces go left again onto the yellow trail. Yellow and white are together for a short distance. Immediately after crossing over a stream culvert (large stones on either side) take another left staying on yellow (yellow and white separate at this time). Look for a giant 4 brother tree on the right - it needs to be investigated. Check out its center for a rock that could be concealing something important. Please re-conceal carefully.

Continue on the yellow trail climbing up a steep ridge. Pass through stone wall and at the tree with 2 yellow blazes, go off trail to the right toward the highest point. Look for a 3-sister tree (the shakey stump has fallen). Stand at the tree and take 4-5 steps east to a small low rock. Look under the far side of this rock for another party necessity. Be sure to re-cover completely.

Return to the yellow trail and continue on. You’ll see Mill Pond in the distance on the left. Soon you’ll pass a lovely bush of laurel (if in bloom as it was in June), also on the left. White now rejoins yellow for a bit but concentrate on yellow. Continue on and pass a very large boulder on the left. Then look for a rotting log on the right next to a small sickly hemlock. Check out the root end of the log for a birthday party essential. Replace carefully.

Continuing on yellow, you’ll come to a red and a blue blaze. The next tree has red, yellow and blue blazes. (Yellow may end here.) Go right on blue until passing between boulders. Turn to the right following blue/white and climb until you are about to pass between 2 white blazes. Turn right and go to the 2nd white blaze. You’ll notice a large rocky ledge-like boulder on the right. Make your way to the top of the knoll around the left side of the ledge. From the top, look around for a smaller large rock that looks like a very rough table. Explore the right side of this rock for a stone-covered cave near the remains of an upright dead tree. Claim your prize and leave a message for the Birthday Girl. Be sure this box is concealed completely since this might be a nice spot for other hikers to stop and rest.

Return to the trail retracing your steps to the blue/white junction. Go right on white for the shorter walk back. For a longer alternative return trip, go back down blue/white and take a right on blue at the bottom. See a large stone with a memorial plaque. You might like to read the inscription. At red, go right and pass a second memorial stone with more names to read. Pass the yellow/white junction and continue on to the parking area.
