Directions: From Highway 126 turn south on 23rd Street until you reach Quartz Avenue. Turn left on Quartz and look for large open field on your left one block down the road. This is the southern end of Redmond's Dry Canyon trail. You will see a small concrete building that looks like restrooms (it is actually a pump station)and a paved path road beside it.
From Highway 97 turn west on Pumice Avenue (by Safeway). Turn right on Canal Boulevard and left on Quartz Avenue.

Clues: Walk north on the black ribbon of rock. Stop when you see a pair of ascending paths. Walk to the bottom of the western one , turn south and find the lone sentry at 160 degrees. Retrace your steps and when you are solidly between the two ascending trails look south to see a dirt path. Begin to follow the trail and when you have to choose between 2x2 or single, go single. Standing just to the west side of the sentry, mark the tree at 150 degrees. Keep your eye on it and keep on the trail -- when you get to the tree at 150 degrees you'll see a stubby little juniper. Not that tree. The very tall one just behind it, also at 150 degrees. Duck under the southwest boughs and find the letterbox at its feet, under the stone shoes.

Caution: This is snake country. Check under rocks and crevices carefully before reaching in.
