Blind Lemon Jefferson was one of the first recording artists, a phenomenal guitarist who's influence can be heard in practically all rock-and-roll and blues guitar to this day. He died in mysterious circumstances in 1929, and was buried in an unmarked grave in a segregated cemetary in Wortham, Texas.

The Blind Lemon Jefferson letterbox is dedicated to the music of this great bluesman, and to music lovers everywhere.

It can be found in the segregated cemetary about .5 of a mile north of downtown Wortham, Texas on Highway 14, about 50 miles NE of Waco. The cemetary is NOT the one with the "Wortham Cemetary" sign and the flagpole, it is still just a bit north of that. There is a sign for a historical marker (not coincidentally, Blind Lemon's) that points to the entrance of the segregated cemetary. There is a small driveway leading back to the cemetary.

Though Jefferson was buried in an unmarked grave, blues fans over the years have seen to it that he was memorialized, first with a historical marker in 1967, then a gravestone in the late 90's. These are at the back of the cemetary, pretty easily spotted because the bright white tombstone stands out from the rest in the graveyard. Check out the historical marker and leave some spare change for the great bluesman!

To find the letterbox, from this marker, turn to a bearing of 50 degrees and walk 11 paces to a small grave in the ground, it should have the dates on it "1890-1959."

From here, at a bearing of 60 degrees, you should see a pair of gravestones sticking up. Walk 12 paces in this direction, between the pair of stones and beyond, this should lead you to another stone, this time marked "PFC ORD DEPT WWII" It's right next to a large stand of trees.

From here, it's just 9 paces at a bearing of 40 degrees to a pile of logs. If you are standing so the stand of trees is to your left, the pile of logs is in front of you, and the cemetary entrance is to your right, then there will be a large log on the left hand side of the pile, pointing at the stand of trees. Between it and the next big log in the pile is a little piece of wood, remove it and you'll find in the space between the Blind Lemon Jefferson letterbox! (I'd use a stick to remove it, you never know what creepy crawlies like to live in large piles of wood!)

NOTE: I live several hours away from this letterbox, so can't check to make sure it's still there. If you go, please consider dropping me a line at the_tdog-lb@yahoo.com to let me know of it's status.
