6/20/05 ... original box placed
9/12/05 ... 3 more boxes placed
9/26/05 ... 1 more box placed
8/22/06 ... all boxes in good shape, Heidi is found, Swiss Cheese has a new log book.
8/08 - continued reports of many missing boxes. Search at own risk.

THE CLUES: Fairly simple – some math, compass work, and map-reading required.
THE HIKE: 3-5 miles, depending on which route you end up on and how much backtracking you have to do. Plan on spending some time here.
THE BOXES: All-new hand-carved stamps. Make sure you bring your own inking device and a pen. None are provided in the box.
A MAP: You may want to print out a map before heading out (http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/parks/specific/ngwoods/newglaruspark.pdf). Everytime I've visited the park, no one has been manning the office.
-----------------

New Glarus, WI is America’s “Little Switzerland”. Swiss colonists began settling Green County in the 1840’s. Settlers from the Canton of Glarus, Switzerland made their home in the area now known as New Glarus and the town still retains the Swiss culture and heritage. A small state park is found just south of New Glarus on Hwy. 69. So pack up your alphorn, practice your yodeling, and make your way there.

Once at the park, make sure you've got a map and decide whether to pick up the trail guide (optional for this quest) at the park office. The longest trail is the Havenridge Nature Trail and essentially covers the perimeter of the park. The trail is punctuated by numerical posts. These posts will guide your way. Hwy. NN splits the park into a northern half and a southern half. On the northern portion of the Havenridge Nature Trail is a bench near post #31. Take note of the eight numbers listed on this bench.

A:_____ B:_____ C:_____ D:_____ E:_____ F:_____ G:_____ H:_____

Box #1: Swiss Cheese

At post number 20+F, take 2(A+B)+3E paces south on the trail until a HC (no math) ft. pillar is on your left. Just past the pillar is a Dx2 long hollow log. You'll find the cheese in the end.

Swiss Cheese was given a new logbook on 8/22/06 after the original received water damage.

Box #2: Heidi

At post number 20+H3, continue 2F paces south and find a large stump immediately on your right. Inside resides everyone's favorite Swiss orphan.

After being reported missing, Heidi has been found, although slightly muddy.

Box #3: William Tell

From post number 2G, take 8(E+B)-(D+H) paces west until a dead monster is on your right. Cross the ditch to reach the monster and find a man shooting at his son in the bark of the dead monster's largest horizontal arm.

Box #4: Alphorn

(This box's location originally served as the location for the sole stamp here: Swiss Village #1. That stamp has been mercifully retired and has been replaced. The logbook, however, remains the same and includes Riiyak (FF) and River Rat's stamp-ins.)

Find the “unlucky post”. From that post, take a compass reading of (D+H)xDx(G+E) degrees. Follow that line (B+E)x(F+A) paces to a grove of trees. Ignore the large oaks. Beneath some smaller bushes is your prize.

Stamp #5: Yodeling

Between a mono-digited sign and a duo-digited sign is placed a bench and a prairie plant sign. From the bench head south on the trail for 10(G-H)+F+H paces. Take the right-hand trail for [10(A+B)/2]-(A+B+D+H) paces. On your right are some small downed trees at the base of a clump of small trees. You'll find the Yodeling Man hiding beneath. Please recover him well so no one else hears him.

Now head back into New Glarus, enjoy the food, the drink (we recommend the Fat Squirrel), and the town, but BEWARE OF THE COWS!

And when you get home from your Swiss adventure, contact us to let us know the box's condition and how the hike went.
