Have you ever been afraid of the Boogie Man? If so, it’s about time you conquer your fears and confront him once and for all. Be brave! Hike to Jockeybush Lake to find the Boogie Man Letterbox. The trail is a pleasant walk following the outlet stream of a natural deep and clear water lake. Boulders line the shore and provide nice picnic spots. The trailhead is located on Route 10 north of Arietta, across from “Lake Alma”, which appears to be a tiny pond with a little painted white sign. The parking area is 9.5 miles from the split of Routes 10 and 29A.

Clues:

This trail is the wettest and muddiest and the most fun I have encountered during all four seasons of hiking. Be prepared to get a bit muddy as you face the challenge of maneuvering along the rocky trail. Don’t let me discourage you with my warning because the hike is well worth its weight in mud!

Follow the approximately 1.2 mile trail to Jockeybush Lake with gradual inclines. At one point the trail crosses the stream which you are following and hear during your hike. As you continue toward the lake you will be rewarded with your efforts to stay on the trail by a beautiful waterfall. Reach the main body of the lake and look to your right for a huge rock slab. Cross over the edge of the lake to reach the rock slab. Enjoy the beauty of the area from this spot. If you brought a snack this is a perfect eating location. To find the letterbox stand on the top of the rock slab directly facing the stone campfire. Take a bearing of 70 degrees on your compass and walk approximately 54 steps in that direction. You should encounter a tree with a large spread-out trunk system. Search within the trunk area for the hidden letterbox. You’ll discover the Boogie Man isn’t as scary as you always thought!
