Don't forget a compass!

So I moved to New Hampshire in December 2004 from Indiana and orginally from Connecticut. This was the first hike I did when I came back to the North East. It definately confirms how beautiful New England is. I hope you think so too!

Directions: From NH Route 31 0.9 miles from Greenfield follow a road with a sign "Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center" (also Crotched Mountain Road you can use it for mapquest directions for better directions from your area). Go 1.4 miles up the road passing Verney Drive on your right. 0.1 miles after that there is an information board. Park on the left side of the road, please do not block the gate. If you pass Fox Meadow Lane on your right, you have gone too far.

Caution: Crotched Mountain Center is currently constructing new buildings. They are using a space near the trail head to store some of the removed fill. Be sure not to block the gate with your vehicle, and watch out for heavy equipment. The trail and granite road are both still useable.

Clue: At the information board, check to see if there are maps available, if so, take one. If not check out the map on the reverse side of the board.

There are two ways to get to the CM letter box.
1a. For a bit longer, more scenic route take Shannon's trail. This trail is marked by yellow tags on trees. The trail head is just to the right of the information board. Follow the trail up through the field through the birch forest, cross the gravel road and continue on Shannon's trail. You will come to a clearing with a panoramic view. Continue at step 2...

1b. For a faster, more direct route take the Gravel Road. At one point on the gravel road past the adirondack huts there will be 2 signs - one directing you to Shannon's Trail and the Knoll to the left...and one to the Summit trail made out of wood to the right. Continue on the gravel road to the left to shannon's Trail and the Knoll. You will come to a clearing with a panoramic view. Continue at step 2...

2. As you come into the clearing take a compass bearing of 260 degrees and view the wonders of Mount Monadnock, the most climbed mountain in the world. Behind you is a old tower, head towards it (and look for wild blueberries around it when they are in season). Continue on Shannon's trail into the pine forest and you will come to a stone wall. Just over the stone wall take a compass bearing of 100 degrees. Take 8 paces to a group of pine trees that have fallen over the stone wall. Just to the left of the uprooted roots you will find what you seek hidden in the wall.

To return to the parking area, you can go back the way you came, take the alternate way that was mentioned above, or continue on the long loop (about 4 hours total) as outlined in the map. There are a lot more trails to this system...enjoy exploring them!
