BOXES #1 and #3 are now MISSING because of recent construction in this area. The main log in box and the second microbox are still there as of July 5, 2005.

Gillie Lake is now known as Veterans Memorial Park at Gillie Lake. But thousands of adults will remember it as Gillie Lake...a long time local watering hole. The 90 acre park’s center is a manmade lake stocked with sunfish and largemouth bass. Ducks, geese, and red tailed hawks can be spotted here as well. The lake is spring fed from the south, keeping most of the lake area crisp and clear. A beach with imported sand, picnic pavilions with grills and a large playground area make this out-of-the-way area popular with locals. Unfortunately, no dogs are allowed. The series includes 3 MicroBoxes and 1 Register/Sign In Box. Bring your own inkpad and pen.

Map of Veterans Memorial Park at Gillie Lake
Syracuse, NY

To get to the park from Syracuse, take Route 5 west, bypassing Camillus. After Route 5 rejoins West Genesee Street, turn right and drive another half-mile to the first traffic light and turn right on Ike Dixon Road. Drive roughly two miles until the road forks and turn right on Sands Road. The entrance will be on your left about .2 miles..just follow the park signs. To reserve the park for reunions or parties, call 487-3600.

Park your car in the lot and go to the head of the path. On either side of the path are large rocks. Count to the 10th rock on the left. Under the edge of this rock is the first MicroBox.

After replacing the letterbox carefully, you can now start down the path. Stay to the right until you come to the red barn building. This is the bathhouse. Find the meter box on the outside of the building. The MicroBox is attached underneath.

Rejoin the path here. Walk around the lake toward the beach area. Up ahead you can see the flagpoles of the Veteran’s Memorial up on the hill. Walk up the hill to this area. Make sure to check out the Veterans' Memorial with full-size flagpoles and monuments to local casualties of the Battle of the Bulge in World War II and Revolutionary War fighters. After reading the stone monuments, turn around and face the trees lining the road. You should see a row of broken trees in the center. Go to the last broken tree on the right and you will find the next Microbox inside an old woodpecker hole. Rehide it carefully.

Walk back down the hill to the lake and face toward the parking lot. Continue in this direction around the path. Cross over the bridge and you will see a bunch of cedar trees on your right with an opening into the grouping. Walk in and find the 3 trunked tree just to the right of the path and to the left of the shed with the Danger - High Voltage Signs. At the base where the trunks meet you will sign in. Replace the box carefully. If you walk up the path to the right when you are done, it turns into a gravel path and leads you back to the parking lot.

Please give me a report on these boxes as I do not get out there much. Thanks! lockwench@yahoo.com
