NOTE: After a rough ordeal with some critter, this stamp has been recarved and the box re-established. All should be well.

This box is placed at a COUNTY park just northeast of the Village of Blue Mounds on County Highway F. The park is named after Ebenezer _____ (1789-1861), who was the first permanent European settler in Dane County, Wisconsin. Born in Massachusetts, he came to the area in 1826 in search of lead, established a lead mining operation in Blue Mounds and opened an inn and general store to serve his miners, as well as travelers and native peoples. He also served as a colonel in the Black Hawk War and was prominent in Wisconsin territorial and early statehood affairs. A replica of his general store is on display at the Mt. Horeb Historical Society Museum in Mt. Horeb, WI. An unconfirmed historical rumor also has Ebenezer as the inventor of a children’s game later to be known as “Simon Says…”. It was originally entitled “Ebenezer says…” but changed for obvious reasons.

Now for the clues…

Count the number of support beams on the north shelter. _____
Ebenezer says, “Enter the trail system near the dumpsters.”
Record the campsite number directly to your west. ______
Ebenezer says, “At the first fork in the trail, go left down trail 1 (red).”
Ebenezer says, “After heading down the trail a while, read about the cow parsnip, noting the maximum height it grows to.” _____
Add the three numbers that you have together. Walk that many paces. Turn left. In the stump, you’ll find a treasure.
Ebenezer says, “Down the trail, read about birds and record the number of birds pictured.” _____
Ebenezer says, “Read about flowers and note the number of flowers pictured.” _____
Record the number of total number of times the letter “Y” is used on the sign. _____
Ebenezer says, “Later, read about the ‘outdoor sports tree” and note the maximum amount of leaflets it might have.” _____
Also record the lesser maximum height the tree may grow to. ____
On the next sign, record the number of leaf parts on the poison ivy plant.
Ebenezer says, “On down the trail, record the number of stripes on a ground squirrel.” _____
Ebenezer says, “At the junction, follow yellow and green.”
Ebenezer says, “Go past the support cables for the tower.”
At the next junction, follow green.
Ebenezer says, “Following the trail, go down a hill and back up. Eventually you'll come to another trail junction.”
Turn right on trail 2.
Ebenezer says, “At the trail junction (where you can see a picnic table to the east), add your recorded numbers together, double them, add 4, return down the trail you just came from that many paces.”
In the stump immediately to your left, find what you seek.
Ebenezer says, “Go straight left into the woods 30 paces to the rotting roots of a dead tree. Within you’ll find the camouflaged box.”

Enjoy,
Father M Clan
