***NOTE: Got a message Dec 2011 that the logbook is soaked. I no longer live in NY and would appreciate any assistance in getting this box back in shape.***

Terrain: A breeze - this one's basically a drive-by
Clues: Easy
Setting: Spooky!

If you're a hiking enthusiast, you'll be disappointed by the short walk for this one. However, if you enjoy the unusual and strange, this is a box for you.

Spook Hill--situated near a Native American burial ground overlooking Canandaigua Lake--is so named because cars and bicycles will roll eerily UPhill here. For some time, theories abounded about this place, whether it was haunted, a geomagnetic anomaly, or something more sinister. In the 1970s, David Dutton, a scientist at the University of Rochester, undertook an effort to find out exactly what it was. His conclusion? An illusion. I, however, happen to know a ghost lives here, and I'll tell you how to find it.

From Middlesex, head west on 364 N. At South Vine Valley Road, turn left, and follow it toward Canadaigua Lake. At Newell Road, turn left and set your odometer. At about half a mile, you should reach the top of the hill. Here, the road heads downhill for a short stretch, before heading back up. This is the "spooky part," the ghost is nearby. As you crest the hill and reach this short downhill section, put your car in neutral. You will coast slowly to a stop and the car will begin to roll backward, UPhill, then over the top and back down Newell Road. Please be careful of traffic behind you.

When you've finished playing around with the laws of physics, park in the little turnoff on the left hand side near the "spooky part." There's a telephone pole at the southern corner of this turnout. Lucky seven paces from the pole at about 190 degrees (you do trust your compass here, don't you?) is a rusted metal covering sticking out of the embankment, with a flat stone against one side. The ghost that haunts spook hill lives here.
