Terrain: Easy (see notes below)
Clues: Easy

Between Corning and Elmira, NY, the town of Big Flats holds many attractions for aviation enthusiasts. The National Warplane museum is located near ELM airport, and in June there is an annual air show here. South of the airport is Harris Hill, the "Soaring Capital of the World", with a soaring museum and active gliderport, where you can sit and watch the sailplanes take off and land, or perhaps buy a ride.

From I-86/SR-17, take exit 51 south. At the strip mall, head west on rt 64, Big Flats Rd. Take a left on Harris Hill Rd, and follow the signs up the hill toward the soaring attractions, until it intersects with West Hill Road. Though we'll eventually be going a bit past Harris Hill proper, you should make the time to turn off here. Harris Hill recreation area offers a variety of activities: a pool, playground, picnic areas, kiddie rides, go-carts, batting cages and miniature golf. Do not miss the opportunity to visit the airfield and spend a while enjoying the spectacular view of the valley from the end of the airstrip, with the gliders sailing silently over your head.

When you come back to Earth, head back to West Hill Road and go right (south). Follow it south about 0.8 miles to a small gravel lot on your right, and a sign with its back to you. Park in the gravel lot and you'll see the sign says Personius Woods Nature Center, a somewhat neglected but nice system of trails. The quest for the box begins at this sign.

Across the parking lot, at a bearing of 180 and about 30 paces, is a trail marker that may be partially hidden in the foliage. Continue on this rabbit path another 26 paces or so to a T intersection. Choose the path at 274 degrees. It winds downhill past a bench to another intersection. Take the route at 352 degrees and cross the first of four. Immediately past it, you have another choice, stone up or wood down. Choose the wood and cross the second of four. Follow this path along a creek some ways until the trail branches at a signpost. Take the road less traveled, that at 304 degrees, and head for the clump of foliage with the bench tucked away behind it. From the bench, at 30 degrees, you can see two logs protruding from the underbrush. Go there and you'll see this is actually number three. Cross over the toads and crayfish and at the intersection, choose the path at 220 degrees. Stay close to the creek. The path will be intersected in a few places by paths that lead up into clearings. These are not on our quest, but may be a nice place to stop and have a picnic lunch, and watch the gliders above you. Make sure you get your head out of the clouds and find your way back to the path, though. Continuing on, you'll cross the fourth, and then walk under a large branch. After this, the path winds away from the creek and comes to a Y intersection. Go 228 degrees and shortly you'll see, directly in front of you, a large evergreen tree at the corner of a dark and dense evergreen forest. From this corner, at 145 degrees and 25 paces you'll see a larger evergreen tree, separated from its brethren by the path. I landed my glider in the rocks at the base of this tree.

Notes:
- No ink pad in the box so please bring your own.
- In doing some maintenance on this box, noticed a couple of notes about people losing the trail. This nature center is not well maintained. We placed this box in the fall and the paths were pretty visible, in the summer they may be a bit overgrown. I am not changing the clues because obviously people found the box, but be prepared to chase a wild goose or two.
- Please do not ask me for additional hints without offering a bribe of unpublished clues, hitchhikers, etc.
