Introduction

This is one of my favorite quick hikes on a blisteringly hot day. A short walk in the woods leads to a glen with caves, a waterfall, and a great little swimming hole. Bring a bathing suit, and water shoes!

Directions

Follow Route 80 into Van Hornesville. Turn at the Owen D. Young school (you'll probabaly see the yellow buses). Park in the third, and lowest, parking lot, and follow the signs for the Nature Trail.

Jack-In-The-Pulpit

From the parking lot, cross the wooden bridge. Pass the Robert B. Woodruff Outdoor Learnign Center. Follow the main path, and almost immediately you will come to a stone bench. Look to your left for a small trail heading down to the stream. At the bottom of the stairs, you'll see the remains of some mysterious machinery and a waterfall. There is a mossy stone wall at the base of the stairs. Look in the crevice on the left.

Purple Trillium

Return to the main trail. When it splits, follow the signs for the caves. Cross a small wooden bridge. Turn at the sign for the Caves and Creamery Falls. At the bottom of the stairs there is a clearing with a picnic table and a fire pit. Face the caves, and walk to your left. Walk under the fallen tree to the end of the caves. Cozy up to the mossy ferny rocks on the far left of the cave wall. Closer.... Closer.... But don't actually enter the caves. Reach up with your right hand and you'll find a small niche which hopefully will contain a letterbox.
